Because as we all know, at least according to time travel movies like Timecop, the same two objects can't occupy the same space at the same time. Otherwise, they both turn into a pile of goo and disintegrate.
That, or 'time reapers', like in that episode of Doctor Who titled Father's Day, when present day Rose held her younger self will appear.

shareI think you're (not your) being sarcastic, but since Time Travel isn't real, the writers can devise whatever "rules" they want. Obviously the King of all Time Travel movies, Back to the Future violated this rule too. Their only "rule" was they couldn't "change" anything that would alter the future.
The series Timeless, worked off the exact opposite premise. They specifically tried to go back in time to change the future. May I please mention while on the subject, how totally smoking-hot Abigail Spencer was in that series?
It would be nice if there was consistency in time travel fiction, but not exploding people
