How does the escape clause work?

I think i found something unrealistic in this movie. The Escape Clause is supposed to let Santa go back to living his life as if he'd never been Santa at all. But when Frost tricks him, they go back to watch his younger self see Santa die. So how was it supposed to work? If Frost hadn't been there, Scott would have gone back to see his younger self alone. If he saw his younger self put on the coat, nothing would change. if he stopped him and put on the coat himself, nothing would change. If he stopped him and didnt' put on the coat, there would be no Santa Claus and two scott calvins. How should it have worked ideally?

"I think i found something unrealistic in this movie." LOL

Good point, but I guess someone had to have found the coat, no?
