Bernard got greedy?

I don't know about anyone else but Bernard was much missed in this installment. I still very much enjoyed it but what happened with the actor? I heard that he wanted a lot of money. Is this true?

Honestly, I think it was more a case of being unavailable mixed with a case of lack of interest. The actor who played Bernard is actually the star of the tv show "Numb3rs" which was already on the air when they were making SC3. He was also in a number of other movies at the same time, so he probably lost interest in this dying franchise and wasn't available for it anyway.

Yeah, the story is that they couldn't get him in because of Numb3rs. I read the novel version of SC3, and if it was at all like the original script I can see why he wouldn't want to do it. Bernard had been shoved to the background, with barely any lines. I felt it a lot like, "Oh, Jack Frost has to look at an elf here...Ooo! We can throw in Bernard!"

"What do monsters have nightmares about?"
"Me! Ha!"

reply

Yeah, Benard was so cool, he was the most adult elf, it made him unique. I prefer him a lot more to his second in command (or, as it would appear, his replacement)

In an interview about Numb3rs, there was this bit...
(from http://tv.ign.com/articles/671/671013p1.html)

"Those readers with either younger siblings or kids of their own may think of Krumholtz as Bernard the Elf in the two Santa Clause movies, arguably the best part of that series. With The Santa Clause 3 shooting now, we asked about his involvement with the film. "I desperately wanted to be on the show, but unfortunately I don't think Disney was as desperate to have me in the film. So, I'm unfortunately not in the film ... They've started filming and they've gone ahead without me, so no Bernard in The Santa Clause 3, but that's just the way the Christmas cookie crumbles, I guess."

I remember reading an article at one point (though I can't find it now, so I make no claims for accuracy) where David Krumholtz was talking about not being in SC3, and he was angry because the word from Disney had been that Numb3rs was unable to work around his schedule. According to him, the people at Numb3rs were more than willing to work around it--the problem was the Disney was offering him crap money, despite the fact that he'd been a huge hit in the first two movies (IMO, the BEST part of those movies). When that was brought up during contract negotiation, their response was to cut Bernard's role in the third movie down to almost nothing, like, "Okay, now you don't have to do as much, so we don't HAVE to pay you anything." He decided at that point to walk away (rightly so, in my opinion), saying essentially that he felt he was being hugely disrespected.

But again, though I know this article exists somewhere, I can't seem to find it now...so take this for what you will. Whatever the reason, it was entirely their loss--DK made those movies.

It seems that since Disney had all the cast members from the previous films signed on, they weren't so hard-up to get David for the third film. Little did the morons at Disney realize that David was the second biggest reason the first two films were so good, the first being Tim Allen.

The third film was not only pure garbage but it also raped the magic of the first two films.

If it helps, I remember reading that article too, so you are probably right. From what I remember reading, it wasn't that the actor got greedy, it is that Disney were the greedy ones. Disney, being the greedy jerks they were, didn't want to reward him for his success in the first two movies by giving him a proper raise in pay to return for the third movie. That is just expected that you get a decent raise to return to a sequel, especially when you such an important part of the movie or movies that came before. They wanted to offer him an insulting pay rate.

From what I hear, he almost even wanted to take it just for the fans, but he felt he had stand his ground on principle (and because he was busy enough as it is) and instead of finally showing him the respect they deserved, they offered the same pay, but cut his role to pretty much non-existant. They missed the whole point. So, it seems Disney is to blame, not the actor who played Bernard.
