The actor who plays Bernard couldn't be on set to be in the film....I forgot why. I think it had something to do with money. (what doesn't have to do with money nowadays?)

David Krumholtz who plays Bernard couldn't work it into his Numb3rs schedule and because the part that they wrote was very small it wasn't worth causing problems on the Numb3rs set to appear in the, I think it was, two scenes that they had for him in SC3

The absence of Bernard was a HUGE mistake, regardless of the reason, scratch reason: excuse. David K. was the central anchor of this movie and whatever it takes to write him back into the next one should be done. The movie was not nearly so enjoyable as it could/should have been and, in my opinion, it was principally because Bernard was not there!
shareIn Davids IMDB That he wanted to be in the film from an article, but they already started filming. Go to Davids message board and look under Not In The Santa Cluse 3 for more details l hope this helps. Bernard Rocks.
sharehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_the_Arch-elf that is a link that explains that David was unavailable due to his schedule on CBS's hit show NUMB3RS in which he is the star.
shareActually, IMDB is false. They did ask him to come back, but they didn't give him the raise that he deserved.. so he rejected their offer.. and they didn't care too much to offer him more since they felt he could be axed out of the script. I work with his mom in a store.. not saying where, but I can say - she doesn't like selling the SC3 DVD. :P lol
shareI haven't seen the movie yet. How did they explain his absence?
By the way, he's in that show Numb3rs. So maybe schedules conflicted. Although I would think the producer would have worked around that seeing as how the character was so central to the plot of the other movies.
Slotted spoons don't hold much soup . . .
They didn't explain why he was not there. In fact, they changed details to make it seem as though he never existed. Such as the snowglobe that BERNARD gave Charlie in the first movie was now given to him by "Santa/Dad"

No!!! They didn't!!!! Did they really think that those of us who actually know this movie inside and out wouldn't notice!!!!! there is no way i'm watching this now. i was thinking about it, for nostalgia's sake, but there is no freakin way now. they wrote bernard out, they are screwed if they make a fourth, there will be no money in it, except through the children who were born after it actually came out. i hate modern industry.

Considering the fact that the actor who plays Bernard is now the lead actor on Numb3rs, I think that explains whay he wasn't included in the cast this time around.
And have you seen him recently, he looks too grown up and un-elf like. There's no way he could have played the elf part with out them going into a long discussion about why he has aged so quickly in such a short time. Do you not remember that elves can be 100's or 1000's of years old? So why would Bernard go from being a young looking 100 yr old elf to five years later looking so much older.
good explanation. I think that, and I could be wrong, is that the person was asking "how did the characters in the movie explain away Bernard?" I understand that David has changed a lot but in the movie there should have been a reason given by "Santa" or someone else as to where "Bernard" was if the filmmakers really thought that they couldn't include him. Just a thought. :-)
shareThey could've even recast it <gasp>. But making the character disappear with no explanation is just bad storytelling.

On David's IMDB under his boards called Not In The Santa Clause 3 it explains more as well That he wanted to be in the movie, but was unaware that filming had already begun. This is also what I know. I hope this information hellp a little. Sorry it can't be more.
shareLet me verify some of the stuff here as to his absence:
Believe it or not, David Krumholtz does NOT look to old to be Bernard. He is very short for a guy his age. I'm only half-an-inch shorter than he is, and people mistake me for 16 all the time(Bernard is meant to look 16). Besides, we have all seen what makeup can do these days.
The rumors of a scheduling conflict with NUMB3RS also appear to have been false, as the actor himself says he could have easily worked around it in an interview.
The statement about him not willing to do it because they did not offer him enough money is most likely a rumor. It was started on the official NUMB3RS forum, by a member CLAIMING to be David Krumholtz(this same person has also claimed he WAS in the movie but his scenes were deleted and said quite a few contradicting and strange things that make it seem highly unlikely that he is really David Krumholtz).
According to the actor himself, in an interview with the much more reliable source of TV Guide, he says despite being both willing and available to play Bernard in the third movie, he was never even asked to be in it.
Does that help?
shareYes, very much!

I just cant believe it!
honnestly bernard was SO important!
productors made such a mistake!
im so mad:P
I hated how they just cut out the character Bernard like he never existed. They coulda like given us a hint in the movie on why he wasnt there anymore. I cant believe they made Curtis head-elf this time! Bernard was SO much better!
shareI agree that Bernard was much better as elf1 but they did give us a hint that this might happen . I went back and watch sc2 after and at the end of the movie in the commarties sc2/3 they say that Curtis is trying to be number 1 and replace Bernard. I also wonder if he might have grown to tall to be at elf size.
shareWhere is Bernard??????!!!!!! !!!???!?!?!?!?!?!
How frikin stupid. I saw this movie when I was like 6 and he was always my favorite charactor. They are so stupid for making it seem like he never existed. Effin stupid people. I'm not going to watch this movie now.
"Mutation. It is the key to our evolution."
major sux, they should of just given him all the money he wanted, i swear they would have made it all back w/ him in the film.
sharehe got to old in the first movie he was 16 and in the sacont he was about 24 and in this one he would have been about 30 or 27!
"If I had known this is what friends were for, I would have signed up as an enemy"
Why didn't they just re-cast! It would have been better than just trying to re-write history.

My little girl who is 4 asked this question too- "Where is Bernard?"
I didn't really know how to answer her so I watched the whole movie and found they didn't give any sort of explanation as to where he was. I did notice the other little guy said he was "Head Elf now" but no reason why Bernard was gone. I understand the actor would have likely been too old to play the elf considering the elves look like children and are not supposed to age, but they still could have given a little reason as to why he's gone. If a 4 year old child noticed, it goes to show he was a favorite character from the last movies. Pretty lazy on the story writers part.
The lack of Bernard was the final nail in the coffin.
And anyone saying that the actor wasn't brought back because of his age is wrong! He addressed it and said he couldn't play Bernard for a number of reasons but he was asked to return. But anyway, he played Bernard in the second film and that was a massive gap from the first. On the other hand the third was only a handful of years later. And while he does look older now and has gotten a bigger, he still looked mostly the same in '05/06. He was like 16 years old in the first film and 24 in the second.
