I also loved it. I saw the TV guide and didn't fancy the premise but watched it anyway because I'll watch anything with Paul Giamatti in it.

And how glad I am that I did! I also don't get what all the detractors are on about. Some critics seem to have a problem with the Director giving himself a role- just because that role is the role of a 'martyr'. So what?!

Maybe I'm just getting sentimental in my old age but I found this totally 'hairs standing-on-the-back-of-my-neck' uplifting, especially when it's Freddie mesmermizing the Scrunt. (Yeah, I loved the soundtrack, too)

The fact that they got the roles wrong was a nice twist I thought.

M. Night. Shyamalan. Stupid name, great storyteller and Director (also really loved the understated Unbreakable as well as the Sixth Sense)

Yeah i came across this movie by chance too, it was on hbo and i knew paul giamatti was good and there was nothing else on, so i started watching it say 20 minutes in, and i loved it! i had NO idea it would be a fairy tale, and them trying to help her get back to her world! it was so awesome! Yeah and i loved the village too, i had noooo idea they would be living in modern time, that was genius!!

Thanks

Stupid name? What would be your full name I would like to know, lets comment and rate it.

I dont understand how people can critisize individuals names! How dense can you get, jeez.

I love this movie too! I never get why people hate on it so much. Honestly, it could be how it was marketed, as a thriller type of movie, or maybe some of the audience came in expecting something more creepy from Shyamalan, like how he delivered with the Sixth Sense. Personally, I think it's one of his strongest films. The characters, the relationships, the overall story arc, and the twist are well thought out and engaging. Just the symbolism between Story and Cleveland's relationship and how it helps Cleveland is just heart-wrenchingly beautiful. She gives him hope and helps him reconcile his guilt for his family. Anyway, I always feel like this movie got a bad rap because people were too stubborn to give the movie a chance once they realized it wasn't something they were expecting or necessarily wanting.

So true!

The OP should feel free to use the same excellent logic for all movies, or even all things in the world.

""i think people who like / dont like are just kinda lame, or they like / dont like it for whatever reason".

Wow.

The good news is, most people can scrape up some "whatever" reason about why they like or don't like something. That will save them from risks of being called lame.

So did you like it or not jonah... because it seems that you enter just to get a fight...

I loved this movies too .-. and yes i dont understand why some people say it sucks or its the worst thing in the world etc... probably they just want attention even if its not such a great movie it does deserve at least a 5 but i gave it a 10 cause i loved it .-.

As it turns out, I thought "Lady in the Water" was Shyamalan's worst film -- until "Happening" came out. Both are excellent compendia of what NOT to do when striving for excellence in film.

I pity your inability to understand, but I have some help for you. Follow this link, and then please read the page from top to bottom. You will be given all the information you need to understand why some people say it sucks. Here you go: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452637/usercomments?filter=hate

You're welcome; and enjoy your reading.

EDIT: if you proceed to page 2 of the "hated it" reviews, there is an excellent one titled "Utter Rubbish" that does a good job of listing most of the film's major weaknesses. I recommend that review highly. Your ability to understand will be quickly raised by reading that.

Understanding something can be spoon-fed by someone who is an "authority"? I prefer to have my opinions self formed. I do not presume to judge a movie on technical merits, I just know I like LITW.

. . . and you might miss a few really entertaining movies that have been panned by the critics.

I really loved this too.

And you can find "Hated It" reviews on every mainstream film. I personally hated both the 1931 "Dracula" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." They're both regarded as magnificent films by the majority, but I find pleasure in the knowledge that others like me hated them both (and for good reasons as well). On the other hand, I loved movies like "The Postman" and the remake of "Planet of the Apes" which are both thought of as "atrocious" by the critics and the majority. Does that make me an idiot? Of course not.

Read my topic here "Why You Shouldn't Hate This Film," although the comment immediately after my post was also quite encouraging. I thought LitW was quite intriguing and worth the watch. I'll be buying it soon, I think M. Knight deserves my money, especially after all the beatings he's been getting about all his recent films, including "The Village" (which I loved) and "The Happening" (which I also thoroughly enjoyed). So take THAT critics! haHA!

I rate this movie as one of the best American films of the last decade and my taste in movies is impeccable and my knowledge on world cinema and the history of film is second to none.

It's a nice modern-day fairy tale. I watch all kinds of movies and the it continues to baffle me why some movies are so hated and others loved so much. I really love this movie as well, especially the score.
