They chose the ending they did to make it ambiguous. Notice in the final scene that they were comfortable with each other and breaking on the point of flirting.

Besides, commentary junkies like me know that the director specifically defended his ending and stated that in his mind, Aniston's character goes for a boat tour about a week later and they hook up again. Only this time they're more mature and maybe, just maybe, are able to handle things more intelligently.

Now that makes me like the movie even more... i wouldn't have even thought of that thanks your a savior i was kind of like HUH? WHY? WHAT?

Marissa, I completely agree with you. Although it's probably the optimist in me that imagined the ending that I did. You could really tell that Jennifer's character regretted things, that she went on her trip and came back refreshed.

And you could tell that Vince's character had lost weight and set his business back on the right track.

Neither of them really changed who they were. In my small male mind, Vince, like me, still plays his video games, but knows when to set it down and focus on other more important things. He still sneaks a pint with friends, but knows when enough is enough. Anyways ... that was my take on things...

I love movies that leave the ending open. Darabont originally wanted the final sequence of Shawshank Redemption to be of Red making his run to the border with his hope monologue fading off to black. I would have loved that ending, because your mind is open to imagining the possibilities. Although I love the film regardless, of course.

Despite all those who want to poke the finger at who is more responsible (the most pointless argument to get into), I thought the movie was great.

I'm cutting the word count of my post off NOW...

I don't think they seemed comfortable with each other at all when they ran into each other in the end. I thought it was extremely awkward, the uncomfortable kind of small-talk engaged in when you run into an old friend and realize that the only thing you have in common anymore is that you were once friends. So you make small talk and do the polite "let's do lunch sometime.." and go on your way.

I agree with shutters. I thought the ending was awkward.

I agree with <whatever>, LIFE is awkward.

DEAL WITH IT. Either it's worth it or it isn't. Who you are justifies the flip of the coin. If you can't understand that statement ... you WON'T.
