Marissa, I completely agree with you. Although it's probably the optimist in me that imagined the ending that I did. You could really tell that Jennifer's character regretted things, that she went on her trip and came back refreshed.
And you could tell that Vince's character had lost weight and set his business back on the right track.
Neither of them really changed who they were. In my small male mind, Vince, like me, still plays his video games, but knows when to set it down and focus on other more important things. He still sneaks a pint with friends, but knows when enough is enough. Anyways ... that was my take on things...
I love movies that leave the ending open. Darabont originally wanted the final sequence of Shawshank Redemption to be of Red making his run to the border with his hope monologue fading off to black. I would have loved that ending, because your mind is open to imagining the possibilities. Although I love the film regardless, of course.
Despite all those who want to poke the finger at who is more responsible (the most pointless argument to get into), I thought the movie was great.
