i'm not trying to be mean but...

what the hell was up with Dennis (Vincent D'Onofrio), Vince Vaugn's brother character that runs the tourguide business. was he supposed to be retarded? i mean i loved the movie, but his character is just so OFF. it doesn't make sense. he's like a smart guy who sounds completely (for lack of a better word) retarded! (i normally wouldn't use that word, sorry if i offend anyone, i've known people with mental handicaps, i just simply don't understand why they would choose to make the character that way, it's just kinda weird)

i'll admit, he did seem a bit "special". He was the only character I didn't get. Glad to see you thought the same.

When they were having dinner together with both families, I seriously thought he was getting ready to have a heart attack from the way he was kind of stuttering.

haha i know right! like where someone starts stuttering and sweating right before they have a heart attack (in the movies at least, i don't know about real life)...

I think perhaps it was just to have a polar to Gary.

Gary dresses kind of sharp, he's "the quickest guy I know," he's fearless enough to pick up a girl at a ballgame when she's on a date with someone else. He's the talent of the operation.

His brother is the opposite. He's not socially adept. His clothes were always too tight. He's a little OCD about the paperwork. He doesn't express himself well. He's relegated to the paperwork.

Maybe they meant it as comic relief. But, I wasn't laughing. I enjoyed his character though as a polar contrast to Gary. The other brother was kind of in between the two.

Here's another thought -- it seems like so many people just accept how Gary is and even cater to it. His buddies know he's selfish and always do what he wants to do. Maybe his family always has too. Maybe because he was the charmer, his family lavished more attention on him and less on the older brother who wasn't as charming. After all -- Gary had to become that way somehow. And, when one sibling gets more praise and attention, it is usually at the expense of others.
