Not really a comedy

I really can't see how the break-up can be catergorised as a comedy to be quite frank. Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty good film, better in fact than what I was expecting...but it was more like a fairly serious drama with the odd bit of humour which added to the pathos. There were scenes of animosity and childish behaviour some what similar to say "War of the Roses" which no doubt this movie invited comparsions. But predominantly these were not played for laughs on any real scale. It seemed it was meant to be seen as more shocking and sad than funny.

The way in particular that Vince Vaughns character in the movie behaves is borderline disgusting and immature and in the end I think he's made to realise how petulent he's been. Even to some extent by his friend who runs the bar, played by Jon Favreau who I have to say was really good in this film. Annistons character's behaviour isn't entirely exemplary although to be fair she is goaded in to it and is the least guilty of the two but never the less...

I think the producers marketed the movie all wrong and the cover on the DVD and on posters certainly suggest that it is a comedic film and my partner and her daughter agreed with me. A shame really because this was a fairly good film but any one wanting to watch a decent comedy and have a good belly laugh actually might find them selves feeling a bit dissapointed and critiicse the movie as a result.

Yeah, i felt the movie was not exactly " comedy".Comedy is something like " Meet the parents" ,but here, the story is really sad.
During the whole movie, you see how Brooke and Gary are hating each other, and also, suffering.Brooke was the most hurt,in my opinion..Because she felt Gary was selfish and did not give a *beep* for her,and she tried he paid attention to her,and instead of that, the things were even worse..If he was so blind and could not see Brooke's message, then he did not deserved her because he did not know her,so it is ok she rejected him.

Everything was very umcomfortable to see because both were having a hard time, feeling bad, and well,i don't consider this story " a comedy".
And the ending...i expected they would come back together.I was surprised when Gary and Brooke walked in separate ways..I felt a bit sad.

I agree with the OP that this movie was definitely NOT a comedy. It was a drama with comedic aspects. I found it refreshing that it chose to analyze a break-up in a realistic and honest way. I just re-watched the movie last night and, like you, I had always been disappointed that Gary and Brooke walked in separate ways at the ending too. However after their dialogue, it almost seems as if there is some slight hope they still have a chance. Gary did ask her to come on his boat and she did seem very interested. Maybe there is hope for them in the future...

She'll never go. They were both just saying things that neither really believed in.
