I found two good things in this otherwise execrable movie..

1) The feature of the Old 97's - awesome!
2) John Michael Higgins - a criminally underrated comic actor

Otherwise? This film is a total waste of time.

I agree. I could have been doing anything else. I just kept waiting for it to be funny. But, the only good thing was the Tone Ranger kicking butt and launching right back into song. :-)

Sedagive?!!!

you need to lighten up. i've been through a lot of break ups, and this movie highlights the worst parts about break ups. in fact, i'm pretty sure i was going through a break up at the same time this movie came out, and it totally struck a nerve.

Make that three things.

Third good thing: VINCENT D'ONOFRIO!!

Some good things about this movie:

1. Olds 97... sorry, no clue??? sorry
2. John Michael Higgins--awesome
3. Vincent Donofrio--awesome as always
4. Judy Davis as J.A.'s boss--stole every scene she was in, always incredible
5. The kid who played the assistant to J.A. at the art gallery
6. Jon Favreau--fab as usual
7. The not neat and happily ever after ending--refreshing for once
8. And last but not least: the great city of Chicago!!

Nobody is THAT insensitive. It's even worse, because I'm a Polish guy from Chicago. Gives us ALL a bad rep. I really question Vince Vaughn's judgement in staring and producing this movie. I understand that there are women that are treated poorly, but the fact that they pushed the "Polish guy being insensitive", pissed me off. Obviously I'm biased, but It's what I was born in to. All in all, I liked the movie and hope that no Polish guy from Chicago treats his ladie like Vince did in the movie. It's just not right..

I'm not Polish and I disagree with you. I perceived 'Gary' as being insensitive and I felt the film made a comment about man's immaturity in serious situations in general rather than a specific comment about Poles. Likewise, the film also emphasized how women miscommunicate through signalling.

Therefore I don't think this film does reflect badly on Polish guys- It just reflects badly on all guys! I can imagine girlfriends up and down the country saying "You are being an ass hole like Gary in 'The Break-up'!" to their boyfriends during times of strife!

Add the subtle, yet captivating performance of Vincent D'Onofrio in his minor role, and I'd agree with you as well.

I totally disagree with the haters. This film was excellent. The non-fairytale ending and Vince Vaughn's usual verbal genius alone make it great. Aniston's vulnerablity complemented Vaughn's stubborned aloofness perfectly.

Here is my review

-----------------------------------------------------

I mean... i think there should be a different category for movies like this one... Like "Cute Movies" or Girl movies... i dunno. But the thing is... for a movie in the comedy department, i didn't laugh... I had a couple smiles here and there... some little part where a bit funny but not enough to make me laugh. I think it tried to be too realistic, where "What Happen in Vegas" got more into the out of the ordinary context. I was fooled by the cover.... which never happened. You see, i tough THAT was funny, if they truly taped the bed to make a separation... But in fact never it happen in the movie.

I would rate it 6.5 if there would be a middle... but its definitely not a 7 for me, ill give it 6. I am surprise tough by IMDb standard that this movie is rated "hight". Usually movies i would give a 6-7 have a 3 or 3.5 average. Movies i give a 8 or 9 usually have a 5 or 6... so well... for once the rating reflect my standards. In any case, for a bargain bin 5$ movie... why not... I was just expecting more laugh and i tough Vince Vaught was way too calm in this one... i saw him more funny... Jen got the lead easily.

So saying it was bad... no, not really, its just not a movie you would laugh... maybe its me and the "romantic" comedy aspect, maybe im not appeal to these movies like the usual drunk stoner teen comedy, but well...

I just saw Bad Teacher a couple days ago... and altought it was not that great, i really laugh in some scenes.... Some scene where hillarious, and seeing Cameron Diaz smoking weed with DIO on the background in her car was priceless.... I think The Break-up lacked those moments. The funniest scenes for me where when the "gay dude" kick his ass... for some totally unexpected, for others totally expected... As its not the first time i saw that. Or when the guy started playing video game with Garry... again kinda of a classic... so when the 2 strongest scene are not that strong... it tell long on it. Its definately a movie for girls mostly, or young women. Its the kind of movie i would watch happily for a girlfriend, cause i was not bored trough it, but watching it again on my own... nah. To put it in another way... if it make her happy, it won't be a sacrifice for me to watch it again.. but i see no reason of watching it again alone(and im the kind of guy who rewatch movies a lot)

This was a movie about real relationships. And it was spot on. Not a cute movie, not a girl's movie, just a bare naked expose on real relationships. In The Break Up Gary comes out looking like a cad (though it doesn't paint caricatures, it actually paints a lot of heart and sincerity into Gary's character).

But the same movie could have been made where the woman comes out smelling like an onion.

Relationships crumble and disolve for thousands of reasons. This is one example. I think it worked on every level.

If it was marketed as a comedy or a Romcom, that's not the films fault.

It's definitey not a romantic comedy, but I think it is dark, realistic, and very funny. Vaughn has his usual pistol wit, Favreau is great, and more than that the entire screen play is just so well versed in reality that's it's hard not to identify with many scenes in the film.

It's a slice of life. It's not Old School and it never intended to be.

Vaughn has made 2 other films of this ilk; 4 Christmases and The Dilemna, but The Breakup is the one that really worked.
