so many people are going on about the fact the ending was sad, and they wish they had got back together etc etc.

but, doesnt it make the movie a hell of a lot better that it wasnt a cliche, and whatever thoughts you had about the movies ending went right out the window.

all through the movie you were just guarenteed to know what was going to happen, they would fight, split up and he would do somethign so amazing that would make her have a little flashback of how their lives were and how much she did in fact love him, then she would go running back to him, pour her heart out, wed hear some soppy music they would kiss and the movie would end...... talk about boring!!!

the way this movie ends is ar better, not only is it 100 times more realistic, but it leaves the ending open to interpretation, did they meet for coffee and make up in the end? or did they not? who knows, who cares, its just a movie.

I don't get what's not to like about the ending, personally. I mean, you can believe whatever you wanna believe. Did they actually end up seeing each other again to catch up, or was that just the end? You can choose really. I guess people don't want that choice. They want everything to end in the expected way with them getting back together in the end. But even if you want them together in the end, you sort of get that anyway because things looked promising in the end there, right? I thought so anyway.

I loved the ending... Unexpected but not completely depressing. And more realistic than 95% of rom-coms out there...

I'm glad they didn't go with the other ending, I saw it on youtube and it sucks balls

I personally didn't like the ending. The concept of the ending was fine, since we of course didn't want a cliche, and personally I didn't think that they should be together.

But the execution of the ending was pretty bad. It just left you with a "meh" feeling. Better camerawork and a slow piano score would have helped immensely.

FFS its called "The Breakup" anyone who is surprised by the ending is an idiot

I really liked the ending. While watching the movie, it amazed me how those 2 even got together, they were so different. But the ending showed how, after time had passed, they had both matured a bit, appreciated each other, and the possibility of learning to love again was there... It's just too bad they had to lose such a lovely condo and furniture in the process....

I totally agree. The only redeeming quality about this movie is that they didn't make up at the end and that it is, yes, open for interpretation. It slightly elevated an otherwise very mediocre film.

The ending is why the movie exists IMO. It seemed to me to exemplify the stories we all have of the passionate and sincere involvements with those we feel are THE ONE, yet ended nonetheless. A snapshot of our failed romances and the affects, be they positive or negative on how we grow (or recede,) change (or stay the same,) and go about our merry little way. I know I've had many; then again maybe I read too much into "the knight rescues the helpless maiden" stories of time eternal.

Regardless, I have a love/hate relationship with this movie - hated it when I was with a girl JUST like Jen/loved it when divorced taking care of our kids alone 2 years later.

i was REALLY hoping they get coffee together and she tells him how all the men in her life suck etc etc and it was a mistake to break up.. and he says " i just married , if i met her when i was with you i would have...." then walk out and kiss his wife as they walk away .

The ending was so "ambiguous" as it should have been, but the way both of them changed for the better (esp. Vince's character), I think when they were talking both realized those "old feelings" resurfaced and when they were walking away from each other and both turned their heads to look back at each other it was an indication and obvious that their was some "hope" for them to reconcile down the line. Yeah its called THE BREAK UP but its also a movie about how much both have matured, grown (learned by their mistakes, Vince's character especially b/c she really tried to make things work at first; he broke her heart by not showing up at that concert) and made themselves better people (again esp. Vince's character). So I don't think Vince was married or anything like that and she was all for "getting a coffee and catching up"; it seemed like both of them kind of kept tabs on each other while they were broken up b/c she knew about his new extended business and he knew about her work. Usually when you break up w/someone after along time w/them time passes and you just move on and forget and could careless what the other is up to but Vince/Jen's characters showed "interest" - sorry so long but just saying I think down the line they get back together and b/c of him changing for the better and she herself did some changing that they would have a healthier relationship now .
