thanks you've been /a lot/ of help. is there anyway just by looking at my dvd player that i'd know if it was a "region free/multi-region dvd player"?

Sod youtube, this show's worth the quid.

BE CHARY OF CAIMANUSA!!! If they mess up your order they won't fix it. They posted me the wrong Poldark series. I e-mailed them and then sent back the mis-shipment. I NEVER received the correct shipment, nor a refund, and I was OUT the discs I returned. I WELL AVOID those slags.

Publishing companies play nasty games with international IPs. Books are the WORST. (You typically cannot buy the Received English version of any book that has a Websterised Yank version, in the Colonies, for example.) However, if you can find what you want on amazon.co.uk then don't hesitate to order. The currency exchange is handled by your credit card company. Don't sweat the exchange fees, they're minimal.

Use your PC for easiest viewing of Region 2 material. Decryption software usually includes Region Stripping (thank the Gods); whilst Nero is not a Flag-Waving-Yank program. That is: it will play PAL format for you. Unlike *cough* Windows Media Player *cough* (unless Micro$oft bloody FIXED that recently, I haven't tried using it for over 3 years now). Don't waste your money on external PAL/NTSC converters for your DVD player -- they tend to be dodgy at best; no need to bother with trying to find multi-region players -- these are usually hack-jobs, anyroad.

One COULD buy a PAL PS3... but again, if you bought a Blu-ray player for your PC and follow my advice from above paragraph: decryption software + Nero player, you will be fine. Cheers.
