Zeus was known to change his appearance to suit the occasion. Seems reasonable to me that Ares might have similar abilities.

We see in the flashback that he still looked like David Thewlis with a mustache.

He never changed his appearance.

The Gods could disguise themselves as swans or bulls or whatever, according to the old Greek legends they could take any form they liked.

That's only one of the things that makes fighting Gods so hard!
