This was great!!

Am I the only person who watched this and thought it was great?? It was such a wonderful real life love story and so well acted, Joely Richardson in particular shined. Anyone else think the same?

Yes I did as well !!!

Thanks to my Mum I have grown up with an interest and yes a fondness for this couple, and enjoyed WALLIS AND EDWARD as much as EDWARD & MRS. SIMPSON when that came out. Both productions had excellent portrayals of all involved. While I loved Edward Fox's portrayal of Edward VIII, Stephen Campbell in some ways pipped him to the post. His voice was more authentic (Edward Fox was more plummy posh where as Stephen's voice was more cockney posh, which is exactly how Edward VIII's voice was described)and there were many times when you looked at him that physically he WAS Edward VIII. While Cynthia Harris's accent was more authentic, you have to admire Joley Richardson's portrayal, for taking a character so unlike her in looks and spirit and totally becoming her. She ain't part of an acting dynasty for nothing!!!

But mostly, I am pleased that this portrayal showed a real, humane and - gasp- passionate side to the couple. Nice to see a human side to the couple who loved and - double gasp - actually DID enjoy a passionate sex life !!!

I feel that both sides were to blame in this matter. I think Wallis viewed being King like being President, which they are not. I think David, through nievity, duped Wallis by promising her things which he (unknown to him) could not actually give her, like being Queen. When it all hit the fan, in his nieveity he thought that he could just go away for a year or two and then come back and carry on in the younger brother role, effectively switching places with the Duke of York (later King George). Where as Wallis could see what was going on more clearly and see where the situation was going more rationally, Edward was more childlike in his view of things. In his nievity he thought that his extreme popularity with the people would see him through. But in the end, his role as Royal Superstar was weaker then that of the establishment.

"After all" Wallis said "We were married for 35 years. What did we do that was so wrong - other then love one another???"

If it hadn't been a rip-off of Edward & Mrs. Simpson AND if it had been, as advertised, the story from "Wallis's point of view" it might have been better.
Joely Richardson is just too pretty to have been cast as Wallis. That alone made it impossible to enjoy!

I absolutely loved this! I watched it because I'm a fan of Stephen Campbell Moore - who was just great in this - I'm 21 and from Oz - I've never heard about any of these events (I don't really know much about the Royals) but found it all really moving - I felt so sad for him that he couldn't keep his title and the woman he loved! awwww

But a quality program - interesting, moving and enjoyable.

Do you have monkeys in Scotland?
~No, but if we did we'd probably deep fry them!

I just rented this movie from Netflix. It is wonderful! I've been looking for a fantastic period love story, and this one just fit the bill perfectly. It's got everything. Chemistry between two characters, the bad guys trying to keep them apart, the longing and the love... oh... it's just perfect. I'm shocked that this movie isn't more well known.

I just found the DVD in my local library and thought it was well made. If they were married for 35 years I guess it was true love. He really didn't want to be King anyways/ Bertie did a great job of that... See Kings Speech...

no, i found it rather disappointing. joely Richardson was so bland, i couldn't really see any reason why edward was cAptivated by her. there must have been more to Wallis Simpson than that. And the actor playing Edward wasn't very interesting either. i think the earlier versions were much better.

He was way too young! He looked like a teenage boy!
