Addiction is not a disease

I guess I'm in the minority of common sense adherents that view addiction in this light. Calling it a disease 1) absolves the addict of personal responsibility and 2) enables the medical/"recovery" industry to rake in big, big bucks .
I'm watching this show (limited options today) and it just makes me angry that this crack fiend uses her entire welfare check on this garbage and has the audacity to openly admit it ! This cushy approach to addiction needs to end!

reply

Since when does addiction absolves the addict of personal responsibility? I am not familiar with the show you watched, but would you rather the "crack fiend" lie about it? I assume this show is for telling the truth, or what's the point. And all of the addicts who have ruined their lives , or either been indicted or dropped dead are not exactly finding it cushy.

reply

The cushiness refers to the treatment approach. Why post in a discussion about something you haven't seen !? And you missed the gist of the OP entirely.

reply

I caught the gist: that the addicts are being pampered and not being trained to take strict responsibility. (and the other medications used to help the addict)

What word would you use instead of disease? A bad "habit"? It's a physiological type of disease. It's only a Tv show, and a form of entertainment on some level; it may not reflect reality; can't be too brutal

reply

p.s. Are you trained in the medical field to know that the other medications do not help? or jumping on the "big phrama conspiracy" thing? Have some empathy for misguided people who made a mistake by getting painfully-addicted. (not the ones who take drugs for fun)

reply

Yup , I am.

Everything is a disease or disorder.

This way, everyone can be easily classified and 'treated', especially if they become 'problematic' in one way or another.

The system knows what's good for you.
