trying to figure that out too. Did he imagine it all? But if so, why was she driving there then?

Are you two joking?

The reason the police were not able to see him there in the room is because what was happening to Cusack was taking place in another dimension, a place outside our reality. The police show up and are in the room but they are still grounded in reality, so they are not able to see or help him. All the police can see is the room, the furniture and everything in it's "benign" state. Hope that makes some sense to you.

Eight dollars for Beer Nuts? This room *is* evil! 1408

reply

Makes sense but not accurate, there was no alternate reality, proven by the fire.

Maybe the room returned for a bried moment in the "real" dimension when the clock was reset to 60 mins and that was when Mike started the fire...?

Yes, it seems to phase in and out.

It never happened. It was the room messing with his head.

Not true! The whole ending when he plays tape recorder for him and wife is to show viewers that it DID HAPPEN, and he did NOT imagine it....end credits.

Sorry, no. It never happened. The room was creating "real" hallucinations, in the sense that he could record them, they weren't in his head, but the police never really came into the room. Don't you think they would wonder why the room suddenly burst into flames while no one was in there?

End credits.

But his wife did drive to the hotel, so they did speak via internet and at least some of his information got through to her.

So I'd think either the room gave him the hallucination of his wife saying the cops are there, or the cops actually were there and the room gave them the hallucination of an empty room.

Don't you think they would wonder why the room suddenly burst into flames while no one was in there?

If the room appeared empty to them, they wouldn't have hung out there for very long.

Mike's videoconference call to the wife over the laptop was all another mindgame by the room.

At the end, the lady on the phone tells Mike that "we" have taken the liberty of calling your wife, and she will be here in 5 minutes. Mike protests, declaring that the wife is not involved in any of this.

So no, he did not get through to her over the internet. Something else did...

The police WERE in the room. He was in a different dimension. As soon as the 60 minute clock went off, he was gone. If the video conference wasn't real why would the sprinklers go off to disconnect the webcam?

reply

The police were never in the room. The first video conference was real. Then they got disconnected when the sprinklers went off. That second video conference, where the computer magically popped back on and the wife said the cops were there, was all a trick. Remember the room was covered in snow and Mike was shivering. Even if she could not see snow in the room, she at least would've seen him shivering like mad and mention it. If the room was in another dimension where people on the outside couldn't get in, then fire fighters wouldn't have been able to hack into the room and rescue him when he set the fire.

reply

No, absolutely none of it was real, the police where never there. It was a mind game, as was the wife on the webcam laptop. It didn't happen. All they would have seen is the room burst into flames and THEN the police and wife come to investigate. Was my assumption at least anyway.

If it was D&D, I'd say it was a pocket universe created by an insane wizard who made it a plane of pure chaos.

A similar thing happens in Grave Encounters.
