This movie is so unsettling
Everytime I watch it I almost feel like I'm having a bad trip. The first 45 minutes or so anyway. Anyone else?
CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

I couldn't agree more. This movie is so creepy... From the moment he entered that hotel room until the end, my heart was racing.

That's my take. Well, at the very least, that's the Major Theme. As someone who has suffered from Opiate Withdrawal, this film is all too real. However, Alcohol Withdrawal has a different, MENTAL side to it. Seizures, hallucinations etc. The rest is spot on though. The Cycle, IMO, represents the relapse. The feeling of knowing you are back within the grasp of something you worked so hard to get out of... It's just something incredibly hard to explain unless you've lived or witnessed it. I think the overdoses mentioned by SLJ early on are an early indication of what's to come, as well as the Liquor Bottle.
shareSPOLIERS!! : It very much comes across as a bad trip. He even implies that Olin dosed him through the cognac, I held onto the possibility for quite a while, that he was given enough LSD to completely disassociate from reality. In fact, it's a stretch, but that could be what happened: He even kept drinking from the bottle as the adventure went on. He could have taken 100 hits of acid and set a room on fire. But he probably actually just stayed in an evil room.
