What was the significance behind the guy with the hammer who attacked?

I know it was a character in the painting in the room but did it have any other significance related to Mike and his personal fears/guilt?

ah...ACHOO!

reply

Jebus that scene scared me so much first time..!! I didn't even know it was from the painting and thought it looked more like some mad farmhand woman!! Think it was just another plot device
of the room 'getting' him, theres only so many things you can do with a room and they sure did them all...!!

reply

If you look at the photos of the corpses of the room's previous victims, one of them is similar looking, and there is a hatchet lying beside the body, so I guess it's a previous victim.

What in the world provoked that vile attack?

He looks like a really ugly woman.

reply

His version of 1408 must have been a room filled with mirrors.

The guy with the hammer is kickboxing champ Benny Urquidez, btw. He was the "Basque Separatist" assassin in Grosse Pointe Blank. He trained John Cusack to fight in that movie and also assisted in the movies Roadhouse, Diggstown, and a couple Jackie Chan films. Not much screen time here, however, but definitely memorable. I thought the scariest character was that ghoul in the vent. It certainly would have scared me out of the ceiling and damn quick.

reply

Damn! So it is!
I know him from Jackie Chan films like "Wheels on Meals" and "Dragons Forever".
I would never have noticed it was him in "1408" if you hadn't pointed it out!
Cheers!

The guy with a hammer is just something intended by the room to scare Mike.
