Chatsworth Screening - GREAT MOVIE!

I went to the Chatsworth screening and got in - and I am 40. But when I said I might bring a friend, they said the friend had to be under 35! The funny thing is they are really pushing this movie for teenyboppers, and most of the young people in the audience did not seem to like it.

I thought it was GREAT. A very good film. Aside from the camp fun teens vs. vamps classic the Lost Boys, I am NOT a big fan of the work of Schumacher. Nothing he has done prepared me for this. This is more like Near Dark. This is an intense, bloody, very fast paced and violent occult/vampire/action film set in the US rural midwest. The word vampire is never uttered in this film. The lead baddie is more of a monsterous ghoul. Not a sexy vampire/human, he is more like the ugly Nosferatu, but more deformed. And throw out everything you know about vampire lore - no garlic, no turning into a bat, no Christian cross. The plot concerns a Nazi effort to use the occult to gain eternal life. This movie is very fast paced. The first 9 minutes are in an enhanced black and white, set in 1936 as a Nazi historian visits a German-American family in rural America. This scene is great. When the movie jumps into modern day, it goes right into the revenge story and the action. I will leave out story and spoilers. The funny thing is, as i said, most of the 17-25 crowd did not seem to like this movie. I fear they may cut out some of the violence and gore to make it more apppealing to all the little Britney wannabes shopping at the mall. they need to realize that this movie will play to the 25-45 crowd who like serious horror films and intense action films. Acting was very good in the two lead roles, and the supports. There is a terrible part at the end that sets up a sequel, which should be cut. And the title Town Creek is utterly stupid - nothing to do with the film and sounds like a rural farm family drama. I suggest for a title "THE RUINS" or "THE BLOOD STONE" or "Dark River" or "Black River" Anything but Town Creek! Bottom line, great horror film. A horror/action film with balls and brains.

Checking the board, there seems to be a lot of interest in the two lead actors who play the brothers, Henry Cavill and Dominic Purcell. I haver not seen these guys in anything before. They are both very good in this film. Intense, serious, and play the action and emotions well.

Thank you for not giving away too many spoilers because I really want some surprises. I know that these screenings are designed to have a variety & as equal a number of people between 17-45 as they can get. so they can get as many opinions as possible to see which age group it would attract.

After reading what you wrote, I'm guessing they want the gore & the violence. But you say the teeny boppers didn't like it because it was dark. Odd, most males love blood & violence. But I guess they didn't like the intense dark violence & preferred the campy cheesy violence.

I hope they keep the darkness and go for the 24> crowd. I'm guessing they screened enough movies over the years, to know that the movie would appeal to 24>. So I'm guessing the older crowd liked it? Did you fill out a questionnaire afterwards?

I am a huge Dominic Purcell fan, So I am watching either way just to see his hotness. Plus I love dark horror. But then I'm over 25. LOL

Ques: Does Dominic take his shirt off? That's the older brother.

And the title Town Creek is utterly stupid - nothing to do with the film and sounds like a rural farm family drama. I suggest for a title "THE RUINS" or "THE BLOOD STONE" or "Dark River" or "Black River" Anything but Town Creek!

Yeah, the title TOWN CREEK sounds lame. I like your idea of Black River or Blood Stone.

I'm against the campy horror stuff. Its cheesy and makes a movie look cheap. Seriously, Americans can't do horror well. There are only a few diamonds in the rough. When I want a good horror movie, I turn to the Koreans and Japanese!

Anywho, I'm 20 and I'm both a fan of vampires and World War II stuff. So I have high hopes for this. I'm also a Henry and Michael fan.

If the vampires turn out to be the cliches variety, I will lose interest immediately.

I'm 19 and I love intense, dark, movies with loads of gore and good plot lines. but this movie did absolutely nothing for me. It had a LOT of potential, but I seriously thought it was so poorly done. The first 9 minutes of the film was the only spot I thought was well done, and it seemed that everyone else in the theater at the screening I saw it at felt the same. It wasn't even that intense to me. I was more on the edge of my seat with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and that's nothing compared to movies nowadays. I don't know...it is all a matter of taste and opinion. And maybe you're right, the older crowd may like it more for their own reasons, but...I don't think this movie will sit well with most people.

When you say most people, do you mean most people of your age?

reply

No, I mean most people in the theater. I didn't hear one good comment as the lights hit. No applause, no murmur of approval, nothing but an awkward "That was...interesting." silence. Even as the woman who directed the thing went around and asked people what they thought all you could hear were her responses of "Oh, really? You didn't like it. Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."

reply

That's too bad. So far I've heard 3 reviews. 2 good and 1 bad (yours).

I guess I'll see for myself since I will be going to see this movie.

I would love to see a trailer also. I don't think the film is completed yet. I guess they have a lot of special affects to add in. Probably adding some gore & CGI-ing some of the Nosferatu.
