When I saw Mae come back and jump off the bridge onto the street, did that mean that Dau was killed since she was inside Mae? I took it as that, but I'm nit sure? Any other interpretations?
It seems the ending was lifted right out of the Exorcist.
The witch-doctor is equivalent to Father Merrin, the experienced priest. They both fail to cast the evil out and are killed.
In the Exorcist, after the other priest is dead, Father Karras tells the demon to leave Regan and enter him, just like May tells the creature to leave Dau and enter her.
In the Exorcist, Father Karras then commits suicide by jumping out a window, killing both himself and the demon, just like May does in P by jumping off of the overpass, killing both herself and the creature.
I just listened to the commentary track on the dvd and the director was cagey about whether the ghost was killed in the end. There is a shot of Dau after fading out on May dead against the holy tree before the credits start.
Director Paul Spurrier: “People often ask me what did happen to the ghost? Was it killed with May as she makes her suicidal leap, or does that shot there at the end imply that in fact the ghost lived? Well don’t ask me I’m only the writer. Maybe you’ll have to wait for a sequel.”
