I just rent Dominion at my video store. God this film is more superior than the Renny Harlin version. The story line is much better. The overall acting is much stronger. The suspense and the terror are superior too. Everything in this movie is stronger to The Exorcist: The Begining. In my opinion, Dominion is the second better of The Exorcist saga. I don't understand why the Paul Schrader version was rejected by the studios when it was the time to come out on the movies theaters. Let's me say that Dominion is the real prequel to The Exorcist. Dominion is a strong, true and intelligent horror movie with suspense and terror.
My favorite exorcist movie are:
1- The Exorcist;
2- Dominion : Prequel to the exorcist;
3- Exorcist 3;
4- Exorcist: The Beginning;
5- Exorcist 2 : The Heretic.

Disregard Exorcist 2: The Heretic and Exorcist: The Beginning !
Dominon : Prequel To The Exorcist and Exorcist 3: Legion are both way under rated!

I'm working on an "Exorcist trilogy" DVD box set (y'know, custom cover art and the like). That's exactly how they're going to line up, Erik.

I still don't think The Beginning is terrible. As a popcorn slasher flick, I think it's actually pretty good (and my girlfriend, who loves 1 and 3, prefers it to Dominion -- though she readily admits it's not really a fair comparison since Schrader wasn't able to finish his cut). The less said about The Heretic, the better.

If I were to rate 'em, I'd go:

1. The Exorcist (A+)
2. Exorcist III: Legion (A-)
3. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (B+)
4. Exorcist: The Beginning (C+)
5. Exorcist II: The Heretic (D)

After watching Shrader's version, I realized that yes this is a better film than Harlin's version but I can see why the studio wasn't interested. Shrader's version is a quieter version, a deeper version where as they felt that Harlin's version would have a more mass appeal.

You are right the studio wanted and got an american (Jerry Bruchiemer) story, in Harlin's version all flash, Shrader version will stand the test of time much better story and plot. Bond girls are great on the eyes but they by and large can't act worth *beep*
