What was up with the hyenas?

There's more than one kind of hyena. There are 3. Those in the movie resemble the striped hyena.

It doesn't help that Morgan Creek gave no budget to this film WHATSOEVER. The CGI for the hyenas was quite terrible. They obviously didn't care about the film. I mean, they released it the same day as Star Wars Episode III came out, and as a limited release on top of that.
