Whats the deal of making 2 prequels completely different?

I saw The Beginning long time ago when it came out and I wasnt that good
Some one told me that Dominion was better I watched it today and i think it was evene worse
But the thing is why did they made 2 prequels that had completely different stories?

The Beginning: Those two little black brothers, the oldest one gets eat by hyenas and the little one survives and later he is suspected of been posses but at the end its that other woman

Dominion: Those same little brothers are now in a school and the little one gets killed by that crazy guy and the oldest one survives. But they have nothing to do with the possesion now. In this on its that ugly guy Cheche that is posses and he wasnt in The Beginning

And many more different things

Frankly, it came down to TPTB hating "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" because it was - well - dull to them and they remade it, with the same lead actor, into "Exorcist: The Beginning", a bit bloodier (with many of the same scenes but cut differently) and with a sexier lead actress, which they released into the theatre.
