Whats going on here??

Ok, I realize that im delving into fanbase territory without really being a fan here - but I'm really confused and I'd like some answers. Sometime lastweek I watched a rather mediocre film titled Exorcist: The Beggining. Pretty much a waste of time, but hey - didn't have much else going on. Anyways I didn't think more about it until this evening when I switched on the TV to make some background noise while I put away laundry and saw what I first believed to be the same film. I assumed this due to the fact that it had the same exact set, an almost identical cast of people in the same roles, and a relativly identical storyline. However, due to some small differences - like the retarded caveman demon - I soon figured out I wasn't watching the same film. So someone please explain how this happened - what are the circumstances underwhich what is arguably two versions of the same movie are made a year apart with the same set and cast - 'cause I'm seriously weirded out.

Morgan Creek was not happy with the vesrion you watched last, called Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. Apparently there wasn't enough blood or demon scenes or something like that. The director of this version is Paul Schrader.

So, they got another director to reshoot the entire film, Renny Harlin. The movie was now titled, Exorcist: The Beginning. And this was the version released to the theaters.

I watched The Beginning a couple of times, and just last night I watched Dominion. Dominion was good, had some more explanations, but I thought The Beginning holds up slightly better for entertainment value. Dominion was ok, don't see a reason why they should have re-shot the entire movie, but whatever.
