now im confuzzeldd

ok ive seen the 3 exorsist films in the past plus "E'3" on sky lastnight
since id seen "E'the begining" last week
now i learn there is another exorsist film with the same actor playing young
father merin in both films
can anyone tell me how all the films fit in to a credable time line
excuding "E'2" whitch doesent deserve the right to be in the series
i also thought in "E' the beginning" was quite credible
as it shows merrin having a relationship with a doctor woman then loosing her but at the same time renouncing his faith it also set up the origional ragan
possesion film up so is DOMINION a sequel to beginning

Although I could somehow be wrong, what I've gathered is that Dominion was shot and the studio decided it was not good enough to be released, so they picked up a new director, new supporting cast, and basically remade the whole movie. This "remake" was Beginning, which came out in theaters a year or two ago. Although Dominion was made first, it was only released on video recently because the studio had shelved it and made "beginning". So basically, beginning and dominion are different versions of the same movie. Which one is better can be left for discussion on a different thread, I guess.

Well I too am confused, they are both on TV right now, and I keep switching them back and forth, but I am lost as too why they did this. I do like the theatrical release much better IMO, and there are some difference's, but the Dominion was released in 2005, where as the "Beginning" was released in 2004? So was Dominion made first?

reply

Dominion was made first and then shelved to make way for Renny Harlin's 'Exorcist:The Beginning'.
Just to add to confusion, Exorcist 2: The Heretic also shows flashbacks of the young Father Merrin as he performs an Exorcism in Ethiopea. All three films, Dominion, The Beginning and The Heretic are based upon the single line in the original film of The Exorcist when Father Bermingham reveals Merrins previous Exorcism as ' Besides he's had experience, ten, twelve years ago in Africa. A young boy, the exorcism supposedly lasted a month, heard it damn near killed him'
Just think, if they'd have cut those lines we wouldn't have had to suffer the terrible sequels.

Can anyone answer the question WHY????? I mean do we honestly need Prequels to the prequels? The two movies doen't make any sence together. Why did they even release this one? All it's doing is confusing people including me!

reply

Well, there is a really simple and easily found answer to that question under the trivia section. You know, the pag you get when you look up this title? Why not take a look there, instead of taking the long road of writing here? But for your sake I´ll just paste it here instead. So you don´t get confused again...

"Paul Schrader was originally hired as director of Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), but the studio ultimately rejected his "psychological thriller" approach, saying it was "commercially unmarketable". The decision was made to extensively rewrite and re-shoot the script, with several roles performed by other actors and directed by Renny Harlin. Schrader's version was supposed to have a direct-to-video release as a feature on the DVD release of Harlin's version. However, in the wake of Beginning's box office failure, the studio abandoned this idea, allowing Schrader to present his version on several film festivals, as well as giving it a small scale theatrical release in several countries under the title Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist."

reply

They aren't SUPPOSED to make sense together, and who the hell cares if they don't? They're essentially two different versions of the same film. This one was released because it's actually a much better film than the Renny Harlin version, which failed badly in theatrical release.

watched them back to back tonight. both are lame. i just wanted to know why there were 2, nearly identically crappy movies made.

THANKS IMDB!

I was so confused, I am so glad I looked it up here. I was positive I had watched the same movie twice BUT they were different......I had my first taste of Starbuck's coffee the night I watched Dominion, I was up untl 3 am, and we also had a wicked bad electrical storm. I thought I was losing my mind. Thanks everyone for clearing this up for me and putting my mind at ease that I am not insane. LOL.

listen here, both those "prequels" were complete crap, £5.60! i paid to go watch that Begining at the cinema...never have i felt soo cheated, even the popcorn and malteaser fight i started after the cgi hyena's appeared didn't make up for the fact that it was just awful. wrong awful, terrible. Forget the confusion, just don't waste ur time on this poo... They bastardised a good thing, the original exorcist was the way forward...this wow, those who wrote Begining and Dominion must bow thei heads in shame.

It all comes down to MONEY. The Exorcist: The Begining was a rewrite of Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist. Both movies were made. When the rewrite tanked at the box off, they decided to release the original also. They just wanted to get back the money spent to make the films. The two movies are to be the history of Father Merrin before The Exorcist. Just 2 different points of view from 2 directors. Blood an gore version vs. psycological thriller.
