Question about Father Francis

I just saw Dominion, and personally liked it much more than The Beginning. I've only seen, besides those 2 so far, the original, but plan on seeing the Heretic (despite the fact that I can't stop hearing about how much it sucks lol) and III in the near future, which I've heard actually isn't too bad. Anywayz, I've got a question regarding Father Francis, I was under the impression throughout Dominion, that Father Francis was the same Father Francis in the original Exorcist. But, then he died in the end so obviously he's not. Was there any relation to the two characters at all there?

i don't remember a father francis in the original, what did he do?

as for exoricst II, it's trippy. if you don't expect a sensible plot, sane characters, or anything else like that, then it's great to watch. also great to make fun of. III was a pretty basic supernatural thriller. it has some pretty good dialogue and some great acting, and not much else.

Father Francis is not in the original. He was a character made for this movie. That person's probably confusing him with Damian Karras or something.
