Do non religious people like this movie?
It's funny how some people assume you're a blithering idiot for not liking a certain type of movie.
That said, I didn't like this movie. I haven't had the pleasure (or displeasure) of seeing the other one and I doubt I will so I can't comment on which one is better.
What I will say is that a film isn't always judged bad by people because it's introspective or deep like someone else mentioned on this board, sometimes it's judged to be bad because of how the topic of a movie is treated.
Maybe people think it's bad because it's not done well.
One of the things in the movie that stuck out like a sore toe was the choice made by Merrin to have some of the villagers shot to avoid the killing of the entire village. He should have not made that choice of who should live or die, commit evil to avoid greater evil. So in addition that it was quite boring I was getting increasingly annoyed by the nth time we saw Merin wallow in self pity and suffering. The entire time I kept thinking who's bleeping fault is it god's, Satan's or yours for not following the rules put in the good book.
Anyway, I am not a religious person I don't believe in god and by proxy not in the devil, Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub or any other name people give to evil, but I have been to theology classes (courtesy of a christian school) and I have been thought about the many many religions people employ to describe the world around them. So the entire concept of Satan the trickster trying to make you denounce god couldn't grab my attention.
What I did find interesting was how both the British and the local Africans dealt with the evil things happening, in different ways.
Also I found hilarious how Father Francis tried to weasel out of not saying he thought they were savages when confronted by Chuma just because they didn't believe in his god.
To conclude, if you are not religious you will probably find this movie boring as hell (pun intended) and if you are you will be able to comfort yourself with the notion that Christianity prevails (oops spoiled the ending now) and the savages... well they stay savage waiting to be enlightened by Jesus Christ.
