A VERY WORTHY PREQUEL!!!!

An excellent edition to the Exorcist Genre... for me this prequel , Friedkin Exorcist and Exorcist 3 complete the trilogy for me... I went out to see the Exorcist the begining and I thought it was awful... The Plot was pathetic..So I was hoping and praying that the Paul Schrader edition would see the light of day...although not knowing too much about it I thought it could not be any worse than the Begining...

So........Just finished watching it and it was excellent compared to the Harlin version..totally different films and I thought this version was excellent...Yes it does have it's minor flaws and i am not talking about the much debated Computer Generated stuff..that doesn't affect me..It's not a classic but it does have worthy place next to the aformentioned films..If you are reading this deciding which version to get.. do not buy the begining it is awful..the plot is pathetic..if your curious about it rent it, but if u wanna add to the trilogy buy Dominion..

The Beginning had an energetic exorcism but little else going for it. Quite liked Dominion & am amazed the studio didn't invest more effort into making it great.

The Studio didn't invest any more effort into properly completing the movie, they wanted to make some $$$$$ back, they made a movie then made it again, and their Official Version did not do very well, not enough to cover the cost of filming it twice.

It's a Miracle the Film was released at all, So I look past the FX Flaws, which there really is not a lot of CG anyway, and that's a good thing.

It is flawed in other ways, but it overcomes those flaws, Exorcist The beginning has the just Icing, Dominion is the actual cake underneath, I see it less as a Prequel to the Exorcist Film, and more a Prequel to the Character of Merrin himself, And Stellan Skarsgard does a remarkable Job as Merrin, it's one of those rare times that I watch a different actor play a character, and not thinking about the difference, Stellan has a resemblance to Max Von Sydow, and so much of the performance is in the eyes, and it is believable that Skargard's Merrin ages into Von Sydow's

About the Exorcism, yes the on in ETB was more energetic, But the one in Dominion had a bigger payoff on an emotional and thematic level, it's Stupid that in ETB, the British Soldiers and the African Natives wipe each other out, in Dominion Merrin is Able To save most of Them, it's a Redemption, to Me that is what the movie is really about, not demonic forces, but rising up out of your own ashes and doing what must be done even if you don't think you have the strength, letting go of your self pity, and thinking about everyone other than your self.

I also like the fact that Dominion does not have the typical downbeat ending that Exorcist Movies seem to have, it's not a happily ever after ending, their was some loss, But a Battle was one, Lives were saved, a Soul redeemed.

I like the fact that we actually see the presence of God at the End of the Exorcism, I think it was needed in this particular story, God's existence is pivotal to Merrin's Spiritual Journey, and it's something that just isn't expected from an Exorcist Film, Exorcist III did Show a bright light for a few seconds at the end, but it wasn't the same as Dominion, Exorcist III still had a depressing ending, that's not saying it was the wrong ending, that's just saying that it's of a different tone and nature.

The only two Exorcist movies I've seen are the 1973 extended version and "Dominion." I *loved* Dominion-- a great story, a good pace, and there were some legitimately scary things that happened (like the birth? It scared me, anyway). The performances aren't that great, but I really don't think that matters very much in this case-- it's not supposed to be as good as the original.

When I was wondering why Warner Brothers would prefer to market "The Beginning" over this one, I came up with a little amateur diagnosis. I've never seen Beginning, but from what I hear, it's mindless gore and pretty much nothing else. But, after all, this is Warner Brothers. A film-history example this reminds me of is "Superman II." In all fairness, I liked the Richard Lester cut of the film, even though it was camped up and nowhere near as good as the first film. But Richard Donner's 2006 redo was so, so much better.

Therefore, I won't be surprised if the more "potentially commercial" film ended up being the worse one. In any case, "Dominion" is great.

Okay... stepping down from soapbox.

Renny Harlins Exorcist: The Beginning was the MTV gorefest version of the Exorcist prequel. Dominion was the THINKING persons version of the Exorcist prequel. Now, which film do you think would likely make more money given that most people are stupid and ignorant fools who enjoy blood and guts ?

I liked this film a lot also! It was intelligent and thought-provoking and not too gory.
I knew it wasn't made in a 'true' exorcism film-style ahead of time, so I wasn't disappointed there.
I did think the film moved a bit too slowly even for me, who loves films that take time to tell a story, but otherwise it was quite good.
I rather liked the last 1/4 in that there was no pea-soup excrement-urine splattering, there was a real confrontation more like "The Exorcist" novel.
If I had to comment on the 'bad guy' I think he could have been a little scarier, but to be honest that actor was a little scary WITHOUT the makeup ha!
