One of the greatest examples of not having any faith in...

the audiences intelligence and giving them no credit whatsoever to think for themselves.

This film was not necessary, everything we need to know about what happened between Merrin and the demon was either directly discussed or largely inferred in the original film, there is no need to show it.

Filmmakers like James Cameron understand this, that it isn't necessary to pound an idea into the heads of the audience if they already have enough information about a given event.

And on top of that the film is just plain awful, both versions of it, and it can't even stick to what was said in the original. In the original it was stated that..."The exorcism supposedly lasted months, I heard it damn near killed him."

Well in this film the entire exorcism lasts barely an afternoon?

I definitely agree with you. Plus the fact that Merrin's journey in Africa was already shown when he exorcised Kokumo in Exorcist II: The Heretic so there is really no point in either prequel. These two prequels choose to ignore that and don't even acknowledge the events of Exorcist II, so they contradict both the first and second movie and cause unneeded confusion.

Exorcist III, which by the way shouldn't even be called Exorcist, it was *beep* Legion, also ignored Exorcist II. Pretty sure if Blatty could go back in time and kill the people who stole the name of his book to make that piece of crap he would.

Ummm... Blatty himself directed Exorcist 3...

He was screwed over by Morgan Creek, just the same as Paul Schrader later was on Dominion.

The fact that the op stated; the audiences intelligence and giving them no credit whatsoever to think for themselves. and then went on to invoke James Cameron kept me amused for a short while...

Probably because James Cameron is one of the best storytellers in Hollywood and would never make that mistake.
