I believe that it is a likely reason behind the attack. Although it is never stated it is possible, also as they were attacked in the mid 1800's with the house fire.

the movie says THEY AND THEM when she is talking about being attacked everyone and a while through out the thousands of years. it implies some organization is after people like them.
I don't think it does. "They" and "them" are just personal pronouns standing in for "the people (or person) who attacked us".
