1.) WHAT blockbuster?
I think "Hancock" is pretty much the definition of a 'summer blockbuster', meaning:
Mindless entertainment with superstars and pure spectacle designed to reach the biggest crowd possible.
In Live and Let Die (1973), James Bond kissed Rosie played by... In You Only Live Twice (1967), James Bond swapped spit with Both Kissy Suzuki, unnamed character played by Mie Hama, as well as Aki, played by Akiko Wakabayashi. And on and on . . .
Those two films are Bonds from a pre-blockbuster era. The summer blockbuster like we know it today was basically invented with "Jaws"(1975) and "Star Wars" (1977).
Bond films are their special brand and have slightly different attractions than summer blockbusters.
Yeah i think so. I stream tons and tons of movies on a regular basis and i don't recall seeing a black man kissing a white woman.
I see a lot of movies, too, and know my film history quite well - I don't remember an earlier blockbuster with a kissing scene between a black man and a white woman.
Sure, small independent films with interracial relationships do exist, but those films are not designed or appeal to the masses.
That's the huge difference.
So, "Hancock" is really something special in this department, I think.
And it shows how racist Hollywood (and the test screening audiences!) really is...
There is a great obsession TV Movie that is about a white woman and a black dude titled "Passion and Prejudice" that movie was released back in 2001, the full movie is on YouTube, it isn't a blockbuster, but it's an interracial movie and it's better than a lot of blockbusters.
There's also the 2009 obsession fatal attraction style movie that was released in the cinemas starring Idris Elba and Ali larter - it's titled "Obsessed", but it isn't really a relationship, she is obsessed with him and does more than kiss him, but it is not consensual, so it isn't on the same level as an interracial relationship, but it is an interracial flick nevertheless and a good one at that, THAT wasn't a blockbuster either, but it hit the movie theatres.
Thanks! I'll check them out one day.
I've never seen those, but - you're right - they don't qualify as summer blockbusters.
