How can the sun burn out before entering its Red Giant phase?

I believed Sunshine was based on scientific predictions , until I re-watched it recently, it was then I realized they were ignoring the reality that Sol evolves into a Red Giant before it turns into a white dwarf. Anyway, about their suicide mission... First off, they can't steer their USS 'Do or Die' towards sun with a giant ass mirror attached in front, atleast not in the stage of increasing luminosity. Also, they shouldn't have named it Icarus, its ironic and a tragic reminder. Nontheless, I did enjoy this movie just as I did when I saw Moon and Europa Report. They did show us some fine shots of sun. Well done! 8/10

The scenario is that the Sun is being eaten by "Q-ball" - theoretical particles that drift around in space that can potentially eat the matter of stars. I don't think it is even mentioned in the film, only the scientist who advised the film makers spoke about it.
