Why did he have super strength he held up one guy with 1 hand and effortlessly spoke.

It was like he was a refugee from the also-directed-by Danny Boyle, and the also-written-by Alex Garland "28 Days Later." But, with super strength! (in addition to being some kind of zombie).

Because it became a horror movie. He's a monster.

Not a good explanation. I hate, hate, hate the Pinbacker parts, entirely. But that's "why."
