Question about the observation room

Ok, so maybe this is me being super daft. But... The ship faces the sun, and is protected by the shield. We know that if anything sticks out from behind the shield it burns immediately. So I assume the Sun is always ahead of the ship.

How come Searle can observe the Sun from the ship, seeing the Sun from the side of it? Or is the position of that room somewhere in front, behind the panels? I just thought it would be in the ship, but if he can see the sun, it must be near th front of the bomb part. And if it is- is the shield not protecting it and is glass enough to shelter the room?

In the beginning there was nothing, and it exploded.

Yes, the observation room is a part of the heat shield dome. The very first time you see it, the camera zooms in on it from in front of the main dome.

It's never explained, but presumably the screen is made from some super-exotic glass.
