question aboout the ending (spoiler, obviously)

first of all, i'd really like to say that i absolutely loved this movie! it was amazing.

so at the end, he says that its hard to lose someone that you love. so, that would mean that she died. and im guessing that they werent really really young, but she didnt die of old age either.
i was wondering if her dying had to do with her sort of 'mental illness' if you'd call it that...because i dont see why it was significant to say that she died. i mean they told us that they got married and that they had kids....i wasnt entirely sure why they had to tell us this fact.

what do you guys think?

am i making sense? haha.

It's been a while since I've seen it but I thought it showed them when they were older... I mean like in their 50's/60's or something. I figure she just died from natural causes. There might not be any reason why they mentioned her death other than it because it happened, but e had lost her once before and got her back so maybe it pertains to that... Like he made a good decision getting her back and he's thankful, but now there's nothing he can do but he's alright with it. This isn't very clear sorry... but do you understanding what I'm saying?

I'm going to have to watch the movie again (I have been wanting to anyway) because I am just not too sure.

=] yeah i guess i understand. i thought about it too and maybe they just wanted to show how not everything is perfect and all. like people might think "oh they're 12. they're too young. its illogical for them to be together forever." but i think that its definitely possible. i also think it helps that they lived in the 60's. and also they did it to show how delicate life is and how things like this can happen. i thought of something like that after i posted this topic.

Yea that's a good point. Just goes to show that you can have a plan/goals and attain it/them.

Ben, in narration, never mentions whether or not if they ever got officially married.

It's assumed they both die ( or will die anyway ) of old age. From the IMDb cast credits, "James Johnstone ... Ben @ 53, 74 & 81"

It's another lesson Ben learned that is part of "the plan." Final dialogue [part of Ben's narration]: "What you end up missing the most is the sweet burden of being needed. It gives your life a purpose. It really does. And it makes you feel great. That's something else Cassie taught me. It's all part of the plan." Basically, this was one of the side effects of their primary plans. Ultimately, everyone has this realization at least once in their life. I think, Brad Issacs added it to the story because that was part of his driving force in writing the story in the first place. Ben ( modeled after Brad's own lost dream of becoming a pitcher for the Cardinals ) and Cassie ( this friend that Brad never had to help him continue and succeed to his original goal ) being able to help one another to succeed in the goal of both of their plans. Brad explains it in the Director's Statement at http://www.dreamitoutloud-themovie.com/movieinfo/movieinfo.html
