shareYes, I've seen this about 4 times now, and it occurred to me that Waddington and his girlfriend did opium, and that may have been one of the reasons for his staying in China, which is discussed. I think he also stayed because of his girlfriend. Taking her back to England with him probably would not have worked out.
In the Garbo version(which I've only seen once) I don't think Waddington has a girlfriend, and he's more of a comic character(as I remember)
