I cant get any of my friends to watch this.

This has all the markings that people from the modern generation would probably hate. A slow moving period romance/drama movie based on a novel from the early 1900s (?).

For me this is one of those movies that i can never get tired of watching. And the score is seriously one of the best movie scores i have ever heard in my life.and i listen to a LOT of movie scores. Such an amazing experience to watch this.

Its a pity its not as popular as it should have been.

Hmm, sounds like you need to find some new friends! :) Seriously though, this is one of those films that you want to share with others because it is so well done.

reply

Yes, I absolutely agree. It's a gorgeous film. I'm American, and most of my friends hate this film because "there's no action" and "it's boring."

reply

try: "it's full of scenery from one of the most beautiful parts of planet earth!".

The Guilin / Li River area in Guangxi.

"Spock! Form an away team! You, me, Bones, Scotty and umm... Ensign Smith!"

reply

Umm, from what he says, that's more likely to turn his friends off rather than on. Beautiful scenery from somewhere else on earth = slow moving film, which apparently they dislike.

It took me a while to make time for this film - there was something about the description that put me off & I don't particularly like watching Edward Norton. However it's a rainy dark Sunday so I sat down and watch and really enjoyed it. So, give your friend time and if that doesn't work just lock them in the room and don't let them out until they agree with you - this usually works for me :-)

reply

The description certainly didn't help I agree. Took me months to watch this myself.

"I don't particularly like watching Edward Norton."

I thought I was the only one! Lol

reply

If you like period films or appreciate older films, then it's easy to get someone to like this. But if not, don't even bother. They will never like or appreciate it.

Think about someone you love or loved, more than life itself. Then imagine how you'd feel if that person betrayed you. Or imagine the roles reversed, how you'd feel if you knew you hurt someone beyond reason.

The reason why this movie is so timeless is that the emotions it deals with are timeless. Everyone has been in love; everyone has been horribly hurt. But when you rise above it, when you learn to forgive, when you are genuinely sorry and in pain for the hurt you've caused, those are things anyone, anywhere can identify with. Human virtues, human failings, all relentlessly, gloriously the currency of the human race.

Think on this, and try it again. I guarantee, when you see it's about what you've experienced in your deepest heart, you'll get it.

What critic said it was "too cerebral" for American audiences and this had a limited release there? I think it's a perfect movie. The scenery, the score, the elegant script, attractive lead actors, a few discreet sex scenes, a comic touch with the warlord --I suppose I'm more "cerebral" than average Americans but this movie wasn't a dry history lesson. It should have been a blockbuster!
