Fess Up: Was anyone else just waiting . . .

for Kitty and Waddington to get together? Especially when I read the book, when he was so friendly and personable, I just thought to myself, "Here we go again!"

reply

LOL. Funny you say that. But yes, I was anticipating that. Everytime they were together in the same scene, I just thought, "this is it".

reply

Lmao, yeah, I expected that one too. xD

Glad I was wrong.

reply

The thought was definitely there, even though I knew the ending. Toby Jones was actually kind of attractive in this film - in any case, he was the most together, confident, honest and least emotionally tortured person in the place.

What Would Ashley Judd Do?

reply

There was a moment when the thought flickered across my mind, but it didn't really develop into a theory. For a minute I also thought Walter was going to get together with Waddington's girlfriend lmao

reply

It never even occurred to me.

"Do you know me?"

reply

It didn't occur to me either! :) But I did think when Kitty sees Waddington and his girlfriend together (after they all got drunk) it was actually Walter and Waddington's girlfriend because you can't see Waddington.

Oh, if only this rain would stop!
If only you would stop.

reply

Nope, the thought didn't enter my mind! But I've only seen the film, not read the book.

reply

yes. i did think walter was going to get with waddington's girlfriend when they were all drinking.
glad they didn't

When they met, she held eye contact with him and I wondered for a moment if she would try to initiate something with him out of desperation. He broke eye contact first though, so I figured nothing would come of it because he appeared uncomfortable with her intensity.

reply

No, I didn't get that at all, in the movie or the book. I guess I never saw Kitty as a "slut", just a spoilt girl who'd fallen in love with the wrong person.

reply

There seemed absolutely no chance of sparks between Kitty and Mr. Waddington.

When she first brings him the record, he basically implies that she is "second rate" for being charmed by Charlie Townsend.

Mr. Waddington. is clearly devoted to his Chinese girlfriend.

Kitty modestly covers herself with the blankets, when Mr. Waddington comes calling, late at night. Significantly, she then throws modesty to the wind, when she is informed that Walter is in danger.

reply

The only reason why Kitty didn't try to seduce Waddington is because he is not her 'type'.

I don't agree. In fact, I'd say that seducing Waddington is the last thing on her mind, in the middle of a Chinese nowhere, in the midst of a cholera epidemic! But that's the backdrop to the real thing churning in her, and that is how the dishwasher husband she married turned into a tiger. I don't say that as if that would entice her. I believe the entire thing was confusing and shameful to her (the fear of him initiating divorce, which in those days would've ruined her reputation for life.) She was afraid and yet fearless; she knew the chances of the horrors of cholera, and that her husband, that angry at her, had dragged her there under threat of divorce consequences and without even an innoculation (remember the scene where he casually mentions he'll give her the vaccine that NIGHT, not even right away, but she says no to that protection when he says he won't give it to himself. It's like they're both trying to one-up the other on who can get closer to the fire - rather like the card 'games' Kitty likes.)

I digress. I think Kitty had a lot of strong emotions going on in a short span of time. I don't think that another affair was very high on her list, part. not in the middle of a cemetery!

I doubt that Waddington, with his young sensuous exotic girlfriend, was interested in more than just an intellectual exchange with this typical British doctor's wife. And then again, insight and intellect were lacking in Kitty. Waddington doesn't give off the slightest of erotic desire towards Kitty and vice versa.
