Who else hated Kitty?

She is a shallow, selfish b****
Walter was such a fine man, why he didn't chose someone better (me)?

I am talking about the film not the book by the way.

I loved Kitty because she suffers and shows her vulnerability. I counted at least nine scenes where she's crying real tears. Her manners, though insincere and a product of upbringing, give her a certain charm. She obviously chafed under her mother's narrow ambitions for her, but seems to have a real crisis of confidence about her father's love and acceptance. She has a point: "if a man doesn't have what it takes to make a woman love her then it's his fault" but the audience at this point has swung its favor to the refinement & nobility of Walter, and rightly suspecting that Charlie is a player and a cad. Her final crisis nursing Walter redeems her. The final scene as a loving mother and spurning a resurrection of the regretted affair is touching.

I agree with everything you said!

I enjoyed the fact that I was able to extremely dislike and, at times, like the character. She's meant to be selfish and shallow, she's meant to be rude and unlikable -- but there were moments where her assertion was necessary, especially as a woman. I had a cordial relationship with her towards the middle.

agreed. she has her moments where you like and dislike her, she's not meant to be such a flat character

I think you are supposed to hate her in the beginning and I did.
She was a stupid dummy like many women I have known who sleep with/have kids with criminals and losers

I liked Kitty. She made a bad decision but nothing good ever comes from a loveless marriage anyways. Plus he didn't bother getting to know her much. It was doomed to begin with. I wasn't her biggest fan at first but I still liked her especially nearing the end.
