Enjoyed it but… WTF?

It was great to see a personal and eccentric film like this, almost reminded me of a John Hughes film but more insane.

I can see why it has a cult following… but not a mainstream one.

1) Why on earth would an ultra-hottie like Ramona even notice a guy like Scott at the beginning of the movie? The guy was a testosterone void who sounded more feminine than she did, plus he was distant, weak, clueless and offbeat in a way that seemed borderline sociopathic.

I could maybe buy a 16 year old schoolgirl being infatuated with such a freak because he’s older and in a band, but Ramona? No way.

2) I thought the insanity would have some kind of metaphorical point, like defeating the exes was symbolic of Scott dealing with issues of inadequacy or suchlike, or that Ramona never existed and was some kind of coping mechanism. But no, apparently everything was ‘real’.

Was there some deeper meaning to this film that I… missed?

Just watched it with my kids. It's their favorite movie. I don't understand it at all. Must be my age showing. In general, I've never understand what people like about Michael Cera. He seems to play the same character in every movie, I guess people like that character? But why do they like this character?

This movie, to me, took the position that unstable, unlikeable women are more desirable because their instability indicates that they live in a more interesting reality than the rest of us. And, of course, blue hair.

Normally I find Cera… likeable enough, and he has some decent comedic delivery. I actually thought he was great in his one scene as Wally Brando in Season 3 of Twin Peaks, Lynch uses him well.

But in Pilgrim he’s just too much of a weedy soy-boy, with this weird sociopathic glare. That’s fine in itself but it didn’t work for me as a romantic lead. I just didn’t buy that a 9 like Ramona would even register such a limp weakling.

I’m glad your kids like the film, and clearly they’re not alone, but I just found it too crazy, like being force-fed candy for two hours. Maybe it appeals to a shorter attention span generation 🤷🏻‍♂️

" like being force-fed candy for two hours"

Good analogy!
