Personally I like this stat...

Philadelphia Eagles record vs. Dallas Cowboys during Papale's career --

0-6

It is not fair to compare them... Papale's success was making the team and contributing at a professional level in spite of being an undrafted walk-on.

reply

Yeah, but let's be honest. What the hell college did Jerry Rice come from? Directional Mississippi Delta State A&M and Dental School? This really isn't that significant in my opinion. Look at Kurt Warner. That damn guy bagged groceries and then won a Super Bowl and an MVP.

reply

Wayne Chrebet walk-on from Hofstra finished 2nd all time in New York Jet history in receptions.

reply

Yeah, but the poor guy was STILL a Jet.

Willie Parker wasn't drafted; he hardly even played in college.
But he damn sure set a Super Bowl record with his 75 yard run.
Of course I'm sure Seahawks fans will claim a ref helped block for him on that play...

Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. Three Super Bowl rings later...

Doesn't matter where you're drafted or if you're drafted. It just matters what you do when you're on the field. Make a play!

I tried to be clever here, it just didn't pan out.

reply

Yeah, it doesn't really matter WHEN you're drafted, more-or-less the team you're going to play on. Good luck Reggie Bush....but i sure would take him over a DE from Maryland (Mario Williams) any day!

This preseason, the way the Eagles were looking at receiver...I almost thought they would have open tryouts again, maybe open the door for another Vince Papale! But they picked up Donte Stallworth, that'll fill the T.O. void! Wink wink, nudge nudge... Seriously though, Eagles fans, hope your boys return to dominance.

But anytime you're looking at averages as a comparision there is always a minimal number of catches, rushes, pass attempts or whatever for that category and it's to weed out things like this. A backup running back that gets in the game late and takes off for a 50 yard TD shouldn't be compared to a back that ran the ball 30 times for 160 yards. Give that backup 29 more carries and see if maintains a 50 yard average.

and your still a prick

Trust me. ANY college football is significant in your development as a player. The position coaching you get is generally so far above the level you get in HS that it doesn't even seem like the same game.

Going from HS to pro football in one training camp is kind of like teaching yourself to speak a new langauge fluently in about six weeks.

reply

HS to pro football = Death LOL!

It's so different than basketball and baseball it's not even funny.

reply

Tell that to Antonio Gates

reply

I think he meant it as in from highschool to pro. Antonio Gates went from college basketball to pro football. That's a little different.

Anyway in the movie, Vince Papale went from 1 year in highschool to pro about 12 years later.

When you're 30 in the NFL, you're getting old. When you're 30+ in the NFL, you're old.

Undrafted? He never played college football and made the team based on a publicity stunt tryout by Leonard Tose. Thats quite different from a undrafted player coming out of a Div-I school.

reply

this is true. but he played two years of pro ball in the WFL

reply

DAMN MOE, nobody bothered to look up your "statistic."

Papale did have a 15.0 yards per catch average in the NFL...

BUT HE ONLY CAUGHT ONE PASS IN HIS THREE YEARS IN THE LEAGUE!!!!!

You really got 'em on this one. Good job.

Papale's best statistic was being the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL without the benefit of college football experience other than kickers.
