Papali Sr. says, "Maybe you shouldn't try out, a man can only take so much failure." But then he has this smirk on his face, and also up until that point he is so nice to his son.
Almost as if he knew his son well enough to know this is what he needed to say to get him to try out, but it wasn't so clear.
Well if people expect you to fail you have nothing to lose by trying. All the parents that tell their kids that they "can do anything" are not only lying to them, they are pressuring them to succeed to such an extent that failure, when i inevitably happens, becomes devastating-- if the kid doesn't avoid the risk entirely by playing it safe

No, I took that to mean his father was really trying to protect himself AND his son. Watching his son fail would hurt the father as well.
Basically I think it was the dad admittging that if it were HIM, he would be afraid to try; simultaneously warning his son.
