This movie is a lie

The entire premise is that he walks in off the streets when in fact he played two season prior with the Philadelphia Bell of the WFL which was professional and a huge step above college ball which they made a big deal about him not playing.

Even the little documentary on the DVD extras omits the fact he'd played 2 years of pro ball prior to the Eagles.

A complete fraud of a movie.

I love how someone comes in and posts this same kind of message at least once every six months. The story was changed for dramatic effect, just like every biographical movie ever made.

reply

Yeah so don't sell it as a true story then. Thousands of free agents have made it to the NFL from the AAFL, AFL, WFL, USLF, Arena League, CFL... it's not remarkable at all, and not worthy of a feature film.

reply

thats just your opinion .. I think its remarkable and also the fact that he was 30 years old when he started. Also they never said it was a true story .. they said it was BASED on a true story .. there is a clear and pretty obvious difference between the two.

Hey UN, go back to the Lambda house!

It was sold as being based on a true story.

It took fewer liberties than many other movies based on a true story. It even takes fewer than many [most?] movies based on fictional books that were written to be entertaining in the first place.

I figured he had some experience!!

It's a movie, not a documentary.

Still a good movie, but the OP has a strong point. The lie told to the viewers is integral to the story's appeal.

reply

Well, the die-hard eagles fans sittin around that bar aren't gonna be discussing the WFL in depth. I would imagine that they thought it was a joke league and pretended it never existed.

I think its within the bounds of believability that no one would bring that up.

Plus you can't deny that if all the truths were sequenced in the right order the story would suffer. Its license.

Yes, movies loosely based on true stories all "lie," hence the looseness. This one is worse than some and better than others I suppose.

What was (somewhat) remarkable about the real story is that he didn't play any college football, and then spent about five years out of athletic competition altogether after college before giving minor league football a try. So he went about a decade without playing football, only had limited high school football (though significant college track) experience, then he played his way onto the Eagles, which does qualify as odd and could be considered remarkable, but not as remarkable as Invincible. And he did the football try from being a teacher, not a bartender.

So, the truth is a bit more like The Rookie than Invincible lets on, which is another reason they likely rewrote history; to not seem too derivative of The Rookie.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

Most true films are very loosely based on fact.

Its that man again!!

reply

Who cares, it was entertaining!

Name me one 'based on a true story' film where everything in it was 100% factual.

Take as long as you need, but I'll bet you $20 you come up dry.
