Confused about the guy who...(spoiler)

I didn't get a chance to go through the movie a second time, and I was a bit confused about the guy who tried to strangle Lauren, and then Eva clubbed him with the burning wooden beam and he caught fire.

Was that the same guy who raped and tried to kill Eva, the same guy from the party that Eva recognized? If so, my confusion comes in that I thought that guy was the Senator they kept talking about, but at the end J-Lo voices over that the Senator got away from it all unscathed. So the guy at the party that stared Eva down, the guy who had attacked her, was NOT the Senator? And did the Senator actually commit any crimes?

I don't know why, but I was really confused about this.

The man Eva clubbed was her rapist - Aris Rodriguez. Aris was the one staring Eva down at the quinceanera - not the Senator. Senator Rawlings was just part of the cover up through his NAFTA dealings.
