WHY THE MOVIE WASN'T RELEASED

We all know Bordertown wasn't released to the theaters because of our relations with Mexico. Mexicans and Murders?? Looks bad for all the illegals. Did ICE put a stop to it???? Not politically correct today/

I think it just didn't have a following. When a movie is completed, they show it for many, many focus groups. If the focus groups checked "I would NOT pay to see this movie." then it goes straight to video.

They're called screenings. But good job anyways

apart from the obvious political niggles which couldve stirred up trouble, the film also features a rape and a few scenes involving mutilated corpses, not to mention antonio banderas' character being shot quite graphically.

for these reasons (and, perhaps the political ones to some extent) the film was slapped with an R rating - once you've got that, your film is pretty much screwed, unless it appeals to a cult or arty demographic. since this film is trying to be a political thriller/blockbuster kind of thing, its not that surprising that it didnt get a proper release.

to be honest, thats no bad thing, as although the script is mostly good (and the plot is great), its really not very well acted, and all the use of cross dissolve edits where characters are walking 10 yards or so across the screen really make the whole thing drag.

it wouldve been an incredibly good television drama, but as a film its a bit mediocre.

and j-lo, god bless her, has come on a long way, but shes still really not lois lane material.

reply

According to the movie "This Film is Not Yet Rated" a film is screwed if it gets an NC-17 rating (b/c that means it won't be shown in theatres). On the other hand, an R rating is what the film maker hopes for because an R rating means the movie will still be shown in theatres (viewers just have to be of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian).

Mexico is a country built on a culture of do whatever you have to in order to get ahead. Lie, cheat, steal. It's an s-hole. I've been to numerous bordertowns and have feared for my life in a couple.

I'm tired of seeing the Mexican people being portrayed as helpless idiots. Their country is an s-hole because they let it be one. They'd rather sit around and blame everyone else for the inadequacies in their country than doing something about. You want to talk about corruption in government, take a look at Mexico.

GRRRR...I could go on for days about this ridiculous excuse for a country but I won't.

*beep* Mexico

WOW.. Iv'e never heard anyone say that about Meixco!

If you are not Mexican, we would rather not take your 'knowledge' very seriously as far as what kind of people Mexicans are. If you live in a country where the government is so corrupt you are better off not telling the authorities about being raped, kidnapped, assaulted or robbed what will you do instead?
It is because you live in the U.S and never had to live in a corrupt country like Mexico or many others but of course you will use Mexico as an example. The fact of the matter is that MOST countries are corrupt and so is your so-called land of freedom. Everybody in this world is here to hustle, to provide, to become something of themselves and that should not be used against them.
You said something very funny: 'I'm tired of seeing the Mexican people being portrayed as helpless idiots' Whenever they are portrayed as rich, powerful people we hear that most Mexicans are not like that therefore we should show the 'real' Mexican people. Whenever we see Mexicans criminals on TV we hear 'Mexicans are terrible, and the cause of all problems, they are dangerous....The truth is, people like you are never pleased and nobody should bother to please you.
There are criminals, murderers, corrupt officials, poor, rich ALL OVER THE WORLD it just happens to be that Mexico is right underneath us and therefore we shall pick on them and point out all their flaws.
If you have been to border towns before and 'feared for your life' why did u go again if its so dangerous????
***One last thing***
Our Country is about to enter or is already half-way into a recession, is there something you can single-handedly do to resolve the problem and take us back to times of great economic standing???....I didn't think so either. To make such changes, it takes more than the citizens to take action but those who rule (e.g the government)
Last but not least,do me a favor and go BEAP yourself, not Mexico
Do us Mexicans all a favor and never set foot there again, racist people like you are a disgrace to humanity, shame on you

i think the way the country is created/colonized have some influence, because it determines social behaviors that sometimes don't go away quickly

Don't compare the whole country of Mexico to a bordertown.

If you'd take time to venture a bit further into the country you'd find that they have places that aren't much different than the U.S. Grocery stores, schools, malls, comic book stores and video rental stores. Good neighborhoods and bad. Sound familiar? Do you think that they all live in the shacks that you see across the Rio Grande when driving down I-10?

I wonder if the Canadians feel the same way about the U.S. Would it suprise you to know that most of the violent crimes in Windsor, ON are perpetrated by people from across the "border" in Detroit.

I lived in El Paso Texas from the age of 15 to 20. I graduated from Coronado Highschool in 1992 and we used to go to Juarez to party all the time. Imagine that, a young white teen capable of walking the streets of this s-hole you refer to and still alive to tell about it.

You have more to fear with the TB and Meningitis in Jaurez than you do with its people. I would live on the border of Juarez any day before I would live in Detroit, Chicago or Los Angeles.

I now live in a town full of "out of work" living on social security rednecks who don't do anything but take Oxycontins and ride around on 4 wheelers, both being paid for with tax dollars. They think that camouflage Carhartt jackets are fashionable and the women go out in public wearing sweatpants and their hair looking like a bird could lay eggs in it. I'd take Mexicans anyday.

We are Canadians and we spent the entire winter of 2007/2008 in Mexico, traveling around in our motorhome. Not once in five and a half months did we feel threatened or uncomfortable. True, we did not spend any more time in the border areas of the USA or Mexico than we had to although we did stop in Juarez for a day to buy glasses. The people there were just like the people everywhere else in Mexico; friendly, helpful and very forgiving of our very bad Spanish. We will be spend next winter in Mexico as well.

Common sense is the keyword in Mexico as it is in the USA or anywhere else. Stay off the streets at night, stay away from drugs and don't get in bar fights. In other words, act like a responsible adult and you will enjoy Mexico and it's wonderful people.

Exatcly, I live in Juarez, have visited every state of Mexico and lots of countries, US, Canada, Italy, France, Spain, Germany and we don't have reasons to envy them, we live well, in our emerging economy. Talking for me, I feel I live better than 75% of americans, and I live in this "horrible, dangerous Bordertown"

reply

I live in Juarez as well, do yourselves a favor and don't see this movie, its true, we sure had women murdered, but not as portrayed here in this lame movie. 90% of the film is a lie, hell Jennifer Lopez didnt even come here to film! In fact, some mothers that lost their daughters in murders are trying to sue the producers of this movie cause they depict what happened in such a wrong way that all they do is harm even more these poor mothers. I've lived in Juarez for 6 years now and I can say I love this city, we sure have a good life, people are friendly and hard workers. Please, don't waste your money in this movie, its a complete lie with phony data.

I've spent a lot of time in Mexico. It's a beautiful country, with hospitable, gracious and hard-working people. The corruption is pretty bad, and I think people accept it because it's easier that way. If you get a traffic ticket it's just easier to pay off the cop than to spend all day in court trying to get your driver's licence back. (And I've had occasion to do that several times) I've known of people who have literally gotten away with murder because they paid off the right officials. It's a problem. But...

"I'm tired of seeing the Mexican people being portrayed as helpless idiots."
If that really is the case, I'm sure the Mexican people are tired of it too. But I don't recall seeing the Mexican people portrayed as helpless idiots anywhere. In which film, book, newspaper or TV program was that?

"They'd rather sit around and blame everyone else for the inadequacies in their country than doing something about."
There are huge problems in Mexico and they're not going to be resolved overnight. I don't think they blame "everyone else" for their problems. I think the current president is doing a good job under enormously difficult circumstances.

You want to talk about corruption in government, take a look at Mexico.
Nobody is denying there's corruption in Mexico, it's well-known. It'll take a long time to make it go away. I know many young people, college graduates who choose to stay in their country to work to make things better, who refuse to pay bribes, who want Mexico to live up to its enormous potential. This generation will make a difference.

It's good to see some people sticking up for Mexico instead of ranting about everything that's wrong. I loved the post from the Canadian travelers. I'm not denying there's plenty of problems there. We're not in such great shape ourselves.

I'm interested to know the real story as you see it. I understand that you live in Juarez and you don't want to the city to get bad publicity, but that doesn't mean movie isn't portraying something horrible things that took place. If you unfamiliar with the homicide rate for young women in Juarez, I suggest you read this well documented article on Wikipedia:

Clearly your not very well educated about the subject. Mexico's government is corrupted and *beep* up, not the entire country is corrupted or lazy s-holes like your saying. Ever wonder why so many risk their lives to cross the dangerous border to the United States? Do you think they do it because it's a dream come true to be looked at like dangerous bugs or risk their lives with the numerous tragedies that can happen while they cross? I know they don't have to and it's not our fault as American's to feel sorry for them, but clearly they're doing it because it's so bad over there. If your not rich or politically tied then your thoughts and voice don't count. They would take a dog's bark more seriously than a poor Mexican's voice.

I know it's not our country's fault or duty to help Mexico or other countries, but you can't look at things in black and white. I've know a lot of hard working and good heart Mexicans. I've also known a lot of lazy and bad heart Mexicans as well, but it's not a race issue it's a human issue. THere is good and bad in every human race.

I am English and I have lived in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco for 2 and a half years. After this amount of time living here, I can understand many of the points here.

The negative comments above, to me, are understandable. But has the person lived in the country? I have for this amount of time, always with a British mentality.

I choose to live in Mexico for many reasons. Beautiful weather, beautiful women, great food, relaxed lifestyle, "anything is possible".

On the other hand, there are negatives, corruption is evident in every step you take here. It is part of the national psyche, like the person says above, to be prepared to "chingar" (*beep* over) your neighbour if it means you and your family's gain. "El que no transa no avanza" is a Mexican saying which they say, with pride: "He who doesn't cheat, doesn't get anywhwere".

That, my friends, is the depressing thing about Mexico. It has a lot of great things in it, but I can say that the reason that Mexico does not advance, is the people. They are, in general, very conservative minded people (this is perpetuated by the teachings of the Catholic Church) who never think about the future, just the present. They are (in general, before you accuse me of generalizing) very narrow-minded, irresponsible, unreliable, inpunctual people.
The country has so much potential, it's untrue, but will never make the most of it because its people are used to and completely accept mediocracy as the norm.

The politicans are *beep* that is obvious, but if the people were to make changes at the smallest levels on a short term, Mexico would very, very gradually progress. Not paying bribes. Not cutting queues. Not overcharging someone who they believe to be from outside the area.

Before you knock this opinion down, I must say that I am still in Mexico, because it provides a better and more interesting life for me. And I feel that 2 and a half years living and working in the country is enough to be taken seriously (unlike the fellow above who may have only visited Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez, which are, yes, *beep* with respect to the rest of the country which has so many beautiful places).

I saw this movie on the bus and I liked it, but I didn't see the end, what happened, I saw until the journalist got shot.

Hey moron. Asians are pretty racist too. Not all Asians but some are not cool. We got escorted out of a few places in Korea because we didn't look Korean. Japan is a nice country but remember how they treated Asian countries before WW2. Whatever. Every country has a dirty secret.
