i know some people say it is because they wanted to keep the movie pg-13 and have no drug use, but right before the strawberry fields scene jude is very obviously smoking a joint.

I was wondering the same thing. I too thought it was to keep the rating below R, but then the joints later ruined it.
I wonder if there was some hidden meaning to them passing around an invisible joint.

In the Director's commentary Julie Taymor said that in order to keep the PG-13 rating the film couldn't show drug use.

The mime was good. The only problem is that he mimes taking a drag of the joint, but then real smoke comes out of his mouth.

I understand that the Princeton administration asked Taymor not to portray drug use on campus. She may have said something like that in an interview somewhere; I don't remember (short-term memory problems?)
