Oh My GOD!!! What WAS that???

I just finished watching this movie on blue-ray... And I gotta say...

AMAZING!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!

No, it doesnt capture the late 1960's in a realistic fashion, and I dont think it captures The Beatles as a band in a realistic fashion in any way shape or form...But I dont think this film was supposed to. Its a fantasy set in a real time featuring some of the most important tunes of the 20th century that had a powerful message about love, hope and peace which is relevant today and will be relevant until we rid the world of violence.

Ive been scanning posts on here and those people complaining about how the 1960's werent really like that miss the point. I mean, Paris at the turn of the 20th century was not how it was depicted in Baz Lurhman's Mulin Rouge, and they sure as hell didnt sing songs by The Police or Elton John, but then people who complain about that fact miss the whole point of that film too... Oh and if you want realism, go watch a documentary. Yes film can represent reality, and I do enjoy that, but I also truly enjoy film as an escape from reality. And like a good novel, film has the ability to take us away from the mundane and transport us to places and events beyond our reasoning and imagination. THATS WHAT ACROSS THE UNIVERSE DOES! Except this film also delivers a story about love and peace and tells us that violence and looking up to a person like Mao (among others) will never give us peace.

As for exploiting The Beatles... Paul and Ringo endorsed the film, and if you watch Magical Mystery Tour that pops songs in here and there that serve no purpose, you surely have to agree that all songs in this movie serve a definate purpose. And yes, Mystery Tour was The Beatles 'exploiting' their own music to promote their tunes, well this film promotes The Beatles music beautifully.

Anyway... Just wanted to say that this film was a visual and audio treat. Glad I bought the Blue-Ray and will be watching it again.

Yes, it's not meant to be a factual, historical look at the 1960s, but a impressionistic, emotionally truthful look at how it felt -- not documentary, but dream -- a time when all things seemed possible, even that the world might change for the better. And it remains a worthy dream!

exactly, and it was so skillfully placed BEFORE 1970, ie fatal year that "wimmens lib" took over the Western world to give us the American Beauty depicted in that movie.

likewise Crowe carefully slotted Almost Famous AFTER 1970 depicting the evil mother and professor that made sure the dream would NOT be possible.

the 2 titles say it all, a bridge across the Universe [ie the Atlantic] and all hope and glory despite Nam, then the let down of "almost" and Lester Bangs explaining where it all went off the rails
