It would be a great fight i think if Nurmagomedov was Mcgreggors next title defence. To be honest i think he deserves it.
This would be a classic Striker vs Grappler bout.
I think what its gonna ultimately boil down to though is, how good is Nurmagomedov chin?. If his chin is nothing special (which i think is possibly the case), then its gonna be a critical factor. From what ive noticed, Mcgreggors takedown defence is pretty good, and like Joe Rogan recently said "every round begins on the feet".
I'm in no way suspect about his chin. He took a damn nice shot against Johnson, wobbled, and then took Johnson down.
All fights start in the feet...is played out. I get that, but just like grappling we know all these high level fighters train in everything. Conor isn't a "high level bjj guy" but he still has good ground skills. ..Khabib isn't a Sp9ng, but he's got striking skills.
What I don't know is how many wars Khabib has been in. He has combat Sambo experience(world champion), Russian Army combat hand to hand(champion) (Russian black belt equivalent in all these) and he's a Judo black belt and I think he wrestled early and his dad was the coach. What I'm saying is...Khabib is a dark horse. His ground control is NASTY and his GnP is even nastier. I'm not a Conor fan but I see only a few LW that give him a match and 2 who might beat him...Khabib and Cerrone (if he doesn't let the smack talk get to him).
I honestly feel Conor isn't going to fight him for awhile. Conor already stated he doesn't feel Khabib deserves it. The 3 champions from FW to MW don't want to follow rankings they are calling for money fights. Bisping did it...Woodley...Conor will call for money fights...I guess he'll fight Diaz.
I gotta stop you at Cerrone. Not saying he cant get the job done but the guys unreliable. He has good stops and great finishes but hes shown he cant take a body shot so Conor will exploit that. If Conor wants the money fight and he wants to redeem himself with he goes for Melendez after the suspension is lifted. Lets talk options. Melendez is not well known but Conor already established a war with the Brat Pack. Simply put Tito against the Lions Den. That alone was astronomical in its day when it culminated at Vandetta. Remember who was guideing the helm. Next Melendz ring rust. Conor likes tem best when they are not at their very best. Preasure automaticly goes to the fighter coming from the lay off. Just how it is. If by any means Conor loses an asterix can always save his record. Nick made a carrier of beating legends then getting the record overurned for weed. The chance Melndez tests clean will always work in Conors favor. Im telling you if they are really dreaming this stuff up they are weighing it all to sell. Yeah I just smoked a joint but I dont think you can dream this stuff without it.
"Hi, excuse me. Can you use your karate to open up this pickle jar?"
IMO It truly would be a case of the best striker in MMA against The best Grappler in MMA..
If you would have asked this question 9 days ago...I would have said Khabib would DOMINATE Conor.
but after UFC 205, this fight is extremely interesting...
Conor answered The "Wrestler question" at UFC 205 ...
Most wondered what would happen when Conor fought a great wrestler, would be get exposed and taken down repeatedly or was his takedown defense good enough to stop it..
the answer was neither, the answer was, Conor Striking is so elite,so accurate He lands Fight changing shots while The wrestler is trying to take him down.
Conor doesn't need to have "Great Take down Defense", Just decent, because his ability to keep wrestlers at range and land Massive Shots while their trying to set up the takedown simply changes fights, he hits and hurts wrestler while they are trying to get the takedown that then badly effects their gameplan, when you drop a fighter 4 times, damn near KO him 4 times, your body simply doesn't react right, it drains you, you dont have the same Power on your wrestler attempts or the same technique...
for me that was the most revealing part about UFC 205, that "The wrestler Question" has now been answered...Conor's now fought 2 great wrestler in Mendes and Alvarez and in both fight Conor's striking is simply too elite, It has nothing to do with "having weak takedown defense" like everyone thought...
Chad got Conor down for almost 2 rounds, but when Conor got back up, Chad literally couldn't last 40 seconds without getting caught with the Big Left hand and getting KO'd...
Eddie literally couldn't make it 1 minute without getting Caught with The big left hand.
that's what happens, The wrestler question ended up having an answer that people didn't expect, It didn't come down to Great or weak takedown defense...In the end it comes down to Conor's Incredible ability to keep wrestlers at range and land fight changing shots while The wrestler is trying to get the takedown.
and the ONLY Fighter/Wrestler I see being able to get past it is Khabib, when you fight Conor, If your going to wrestle him, You've got to literally come out and take him down within the first 30 second of each round, you got be able to grab him or have a power Double leg where you can just bullrush him and run him over, If you dont have that, If you have to try and set up the takedown, if you got to try and get Conor against the cage and then try to get the takedown, your done, its not going to work, Conor's going to land Massive fight changing shots while your trying to do it...
but if your someone like Khabib, whom I believe is the best Grappler in MMA, I think Khabib has the ability to run over Conor, he doesn't need to set up his takedowns, he can just plow forward and get ahold of Conor and power through him and get the takedown fast(and thats not A negative on Conor, Khabib can do this to anyone)
the thing that really makes this fight interest is Khabib's fight at UFC 205, He got lit up by Michael Johnson in the first round...
a lot of people look at that and think "If that was Conor, He would have KO'd Khabib"...
but I just dont believe Khabib would fight the same against Conor, Khabib wasn't in a hurry to get the takedown against Johnson and thats why he got lit up...If he fought Conor, I think he would go for the takedown the second the fight started I think he would have a hold of Conor within 10 seconds.
Conor has a better chance at beating Khabib than anyone else in the LW division due to his elite counter punching and "Magical Left Hand"...But its still a very small chance at winning, Conor's basically got the first and second round to try and land a perfect KO shot while Khabib is coming in on him...IMO its possible but pretty unlkely.
theres a very good chance Khabib will retire undefeated...
I think Khabib has the ability to be a 2 weight champ, I think he can dominate anyone at LW and WW.
I would pick Khabib to win by 2nd or 3rd round Submission over Conor, but I would give Conor like a 30% chance a winning by catching him in the first or second round...
Sorry, but Alvarez is not a "great" wrestler. He's a good wrestler who turned to MMA. He never progress passed high school wrestling if I'm correct.
Again, I don't know if Khabib is just a "wrestler" since his grappling background is deeper in Judo and Sambo. Plus he has Army hand to hand and Combat Sambo...
To use your fave...That is lije saying Conor has just good "boxing". He has more than that.
Sorry, but Alvarez is not a "great" wrestler. He's a good wrestler who turned to MMA. He never progress passed high school wrestling if I'm correct.
thats not what the majority of The MMA Community has been saying for the last 3 months since the Conor Vs Alvares fight was announced...
Most thought and predicted Eddie could easily do to Conor what he did to Pettis and Melendez...
now if your saying Eddie isn't the level of Khabib, fine, no argument...
But I can't help but laugh when people are now all of a sudden saying Eddie's not a great wrestler.
because that certainly wasn't what people were saying the last 3 months.
Eddie Showed Good to Great Wrestling in BOTH the Pettis and Melendez fights...and that is exactly what made the Conor fight so interesting and The reason why so many people predicted Eddie to win, They had just watched Eddie Wrestle Pettis and Melende and saw no reason why he wouldn't be able to do the same thing to Conor.
Hell Eddie even took RDA down in their fight before he KO'd him...
Eddie's a Damn good MMA wrestler who's had Great Success Wrestling Elite fighters....
I dont know exactly what your arguing here exactly, I dont know if your arguing/disagreeing with my statement that "The wrestler Question" has been answer, If your just just suggesting Eddie Isn't a good enough wrestler to give Conor credit for The Stopping his Wrestling game...
either way I disagree...I think Mendez and Eddie are Both Great Wrestlers and I think If you look at both of the fights and actually study what happened, They Both answer "The Wrestler Question", and that answer is Conor can beat Great Wrestlers not by have great takedown defense, but By his ability to keep wrestlers at range while they are trying to get and set up the takedown, Conor Is going to land fight changing shots...
Also though, I dont want to take anything away from Conor, His takedown defense Is clearly getting pretty good ...he is definitely improving...
but the whole point is, he doesn't have to have Great takedown defense like everyone thought, because by the time Wrestlers finally get ahold of him or get in on the takedown, He's already landed huge shots and badly effected them..
thats what happened with Eddie, Eddie finally got a hold of Conor in the 2nd round, finally got him against the cage and was trying for the takedown...but by that it finally happened, Eddie had already been hurt and knocked down 5 times, Eddie was badly depleted and hurt by the time he got a chance for the takedown
The samething happened with Mendez, chad didn't get the takedown until about 1:30 second left in the first round, Conor kept Mendez at range while he was trying to setup the takedown, Conor land fight changing Kicks to Chad's body while Chad was at range trying to figure a way to set up the takedown...
In the Second Chad got The takedown right away, kept him down almost the whole round, but Conor got up and once again immediately started landing Huge fight changing shots while Chad was a range looking for an opening for the takedown.
Conor fought 2 Great wrestler in Mendes and Alvarez, 2 fighters that EVERYONE Predicted before the fight would easily take Conor down and Destroy/expose him...
but now all of a sudden, after the fights they are not great wrestlers and Its not impressive what Conor did...
IMO Chad is the best Wrestler at FW
and Eddie is the 2nd best Wrestler at LW(Khabib is obviously first)
and Conor beat them both the exact same way...Beating The Best wrestler at FW and The 2nd best wrestler at LW "answers the wrestler question"
I'm not everyone and I'm saying that IMO Eddie is not a GREAT wrestler. He does not have near the pedigree that the actual great wrestlers have.
I actually remember people saying he has good power and a grant chin. I think I even remember Rogan and Goldie talking about that his boxing is really good.
But say what you want, but the proof is there he is a good to just above average MMA wrestler. He dominated Pettis? Oh wow! Pettis has the known wrestling ability? I remember that fight in a way that Pettis looked terrible more than Eddie looked great.
I'm not going to sugar coat it...I never thought Eddie should have gotten a title shot, I never thought he'd win the title and I'm not so convinced about him...this is my opinion. I think he got lucky with injuries, like Khabib, being out, but that's again me.
Great MMA wrestling is GSP, Khabib, Randy, DC, Askern. ..
I don't see Alverez as a great wrestler. I see him as a fighter who is "good in all areas", but no where is he great. If you look at champions who reign a long time they are great...amazing in one area.
Tony Ferguson or Nurmagomedov are the "deserving" challengers, I'm interested in seeing if UFC will allow either to get a crack at Conor since both are high viewed as high level grapplers. Tony isn't anywhere near the striker Conor is, but he actually has a reach advantage which Conor simply hasn't had to deal with in UFC, a wrestler that can match his reach.
Conor had to deal with that reach twice against Nate, and we saw how he struggled in both fights. I think Ferguson has a better head for the game right now than Nate does, so I'm really interested to see what happens if he fought Conor. I honestly have no idea who wins that fight. Conor versus Khabib though, I'd have to give Nurmie the advantage.
If you can read this then you are trying too hard.
