Dirty Harry scene

The sequence when Toschi and Graysmith are watching Dirty Harry at the cinema takes place at the Northpoint Theater, which was an actual movie theater in San Francisco during the 1970's. The theater closed in 1997, however, David Fincher had his production team re-open / dress it for filming purposes to add realism. I can't think of many film makers that would go to all that trouble for historical accuracy. I noticed the theater while reading J.W. Rinzler's 2007 book The Making of Star Wars. In the book, there is a photo of the theater where Star Wars is playing along side the Paul Newman film Slap Shot. A couple of days later I spotted it in Zodiac.
Great book for Star Wars fans.

That's a nice area; my grandmother lived at Northpoint Apartments right across the street in the 80's. Went shopping with her at the Safeway that's still there. San Fran has such an amazing diversity of geography for such a condensed city.

Michael Mann had the theater where Dillinger was killed redone and opened properly for his movie public enemies

I'm in New Zealand. At the end of King Kong, he's in the same theatre I went to often in my younger years to see movies.

Outside, it was made to look like it was in New York. While it WAS still in use, Jackson had it spruced up a great deal.

According to the trivia section, the scene was filmed in the Mann Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles, that still had that style of interior.
