They were without the technology that we have today that catches most killers but still the entire state of CA couldn't catch one man is quite pathetic so Zodiac did beat them and win.

Yeah, he was "amazing" in the sense that he managed to toy with and manipulate the police/press without ever getting caught. Which is unique.

i wouldn't call him "amazing", i would just say "fairly clever". he just did what all serial killers do, he found a crack in civilization, a shadow in the culture where he could hide and act out his antisocial desires. he was smart enough to learn from his mistakes and change his MO, but a border collie can do that.

bundy lived in a time when young women were much more trusting of handsome young men. that was a time when attractive young women actually hitch-hiked around the country. i don't think there's much of that today, so that crack in the culture is closed up, mostly.

gacy exploited the fact that the young men he raped and murdered probably had no idea that there was even such a thing as a man that would rape another man. he came on as just a "regular guy" and offered them what surely seemed to them reasonable companionship, along with an offer of employment.

and whenever anyone wants to call a serial killer some kind of criminal genius, i think about the green river killer - the highest "score" and he is as dumb as post.

what is different (but NOT amazing) about zodiac is that he either:

1. quit killing
2. decided reporting his murders to the authorities wasn't smart anymore, kept killing, but lost the need to communicate about it.

my vote is #1.
