Questions about the Mayerling incident?
So the actual Mayerling incident was covered up by the Imperial Family, but why keep it a secret???
shareSo the actual Mayerling incident was covered up by the Imperial Family, but why keep it a secret???
shareAs far as I know (as an Austrian), they tried to keep it a secret just because the crown prince shot his 17-year-old mistress and himself - back then that would have been a huge scandal. It would have been still nowadays, I assume.
shareThere were 2 reasons: The first one was stated by Gernot -the Crown Prince was married and shot himself and his lover.
The second reason is that suicide is considered a sin by the catholic church and thus the catholic emperor Franz Joseph could not have it that his son would do something like this.
She broke up with me through Backstreet Boys lyrics! If you knew it was them, you deserved it!
But why couldn't they admit it to the public???

Such a revelation would have badly damaged the prestige and credibility of the Royal House of Hapsburg, and therefore damaged it's ability to rule. The Hapsburg Monarchy was already tottering dangerously, a scandal such as the murder/suicide at Mayerling could've brought down the whole house of cards. It's no wonder to me that a cover-up was tried.
